The 2025 NFL Scouting Combine has come and gone, leaving reporters, analysts, and insiders with a wealth of information to dissect. While much of the buzz has surrounded major storylines such as the New York Giants’ interest in Aaron Rodgers and the Washington Commanders’ trade for Deebo Samuel, another intriguing development has surfaced involving the New England Patriots and their pursuit of a true No. 1 wide receiver.
According to a report from the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed and Andrew Callahan, the Patriots are actively exploring options to upgrade their receiving corps. The team’s primary targets appear to be potential free agents Tee Higgins and Chris Godwin.
With over $127 million in salary cap space, New England would ideally prefer to sign a receiver outright rather than trade valuable assets for one. However, if those plans fall through, the Patriots have already laid the groundwork for a potential backup plan.
“The front office has nonetheless kicked the tires on a potential trade for Seattle’s DK Metcalf, per source,” Kyed and Callahan report. “While they weigh the ripple effects of making a player they’re not familiar with, like Metcalf, the new highest-paid player on the team.”
Metcalf, a dominant force at 6’4” and 230 pounds, has been one of the league’s premier wide receivers since being drafted by the Seahawks with the 64th overall pick in 2019. Over his career, he has amassed three 1,000-yard seasons and recorded 48 total touchdowns on 438 receptions.

His on-field accolades include two Pro Bowl selections and a second-team All-Pro nod in 2020. If acquired, Metcalf would immediately become the top target for rookie quarterback Drake Maye, providing the Patriots’ offense with a true No. 1 receiving option.
While Metcalf’s talent is undeniable, the Patriots must weigh several factors before making a move. The team’s new head coach, Mike Vrabel, has reportedly emphasized that “play demeanor and football character” are non-negotiables when evaluating potential acquisitions.
Vrabel’s top priority is rapidly re-establishing a winning culture in New England, and any incoming player must align with those values.
One potential hurdle in acquiring Metcalf is his past comments about the Patriots organization. In an interview with Katie Nolan in January, Metcalf admitted that he does not consider Foxborough to be a desirable destination, despite acknowledging the Patriots’ strong history as a franchise.
If Seattle is looking to do right by their star receiver in a potential trade, it remains to be seen whether New England would be a preferred landing spot.
Metcalf is entering the final season of the three-year, $72 million contract extension he signed with the Seahawks in 2022.
Whether the Seahawks are willing to move him, and whether the Patriots are truly prepared to make a blockbuster trade for his services, remains to be seen.
For now, New England is exploring all options as they aim to upgrade their receiving corps and provide their new quarterback with the best possible weapons for success.
