Tom Cruise is reportedly planning to take his daring stunts to new heights—literally—by teaming up with director Doug Liman for a groundbreaking movie that will involve filming in space. This ambitious project was initially pitched in 2020 but was put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Donna Langley, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG), the plan is for Cruise to embark on a rocket trip to the International Space Station (ISS) to shoot parts of the film. “I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space; he’s taking the world to space,” Langley stated. The majority of the film will be shot on Earth, with the climax featuring Cruise’s character making a heroic trip into space.

If successful, Cruise would make history as the first movie star to film on the ISS, showcasing his reputation for pushing the boundaries of stunt work. Langley also expressed hope that Cruise would become “the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the space station.”

Cruise’s history of breathtaking stunts is well-documented, including a recent photo shared by Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie, which captured the actor hanging from a red biplane. Cruise has long been committed to performing his own stunts, famously responding to inquiries about this choice by saying, “No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance?’”

His star power remains strong, particularly following the success of Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide and solidified his status as a Hollywood veteran who continues to captivate audiences. As Cruise looks to take his next leap—this time into space—the film promises to be an unprecedented adventure.
