On Tuesday, Taylor Swift officially announced her support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, putting to rest speculation about her political stance. Swift’s endorsement came shortly after Harris’s debate with former President Donald Trump, during which Swift urged her followers to research the candidates and their policies.
In her Instagram post, Swift expressed her concerns over misinformation, particularly regarding a fake AI-generated endorsement of Trump that surfaced recently. She emphasized the importance of transparency and truth, stating, “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election.”
Harris secured the Democratic Party’s nomination earlier this year after President Biden withdrew from the race, later choosing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. Swift praised Harris’s leadership and her commitment to issues she cares about, such as LGBTQ+ rights and women’s rights, highlighting Walz’s long-standing advocacy in these areas.
Swift also took the opportunity to encourage first-time voters to register and to consider early voting, sharing resources for voter registration and early voting information. She concluded her post humorously by referring to herself as a “childless cat lady,” a phrase previously used by Senator JD Vance to mock Democrats.
In response to Swift’s endorsement, Trump characterized her as a “very liberal person” and suggested she may face backlash for her political stance. A spokesperson for the Trump campaign criticized Swift’s endorsement, framing it as evidence of the Democratic Party’s alignment with wealthy elites.
Historically, Swift has remained largely apolitical throughout her nearly two-decade career but began voicing her support for Democratic candidates during the 2018 midterms. In her 2020 documentary Miss Americana, she expressed regret for not speaking out sooner on political issues, particularly her opposition to Trump.
A group of Swift’s supporters, known as “Swifties for Kamala,” has mobilized in support of Harris, raising over $122,000 during a recent fundraising kickoff call. The group aims to advocate for the rights of marginalized communities and promote safety for all Americans.
