Stephen A. Smith shares bold Deion Sanders stance after latest Colorado achievement.giang

Stephen A. Smith believes Deion Sanders’ latest accomplishment with Colorado makes him deserving of a more prestigious coaching position.

After the Buffaloes’ most recent win against the Bearcats, which gave Colorado six wins on the year, Sanders’ side qualified for a bowl game. This comes a year after the Buffaloes mustered a 4-8 record, including a 1-8 record against the Pac-12, showing how much Colorado improved after just one season.

Colorado’s marked improvement was not lost on Smith, who went to bet for the former NFL star. Speaking on “First Take,” Smith explained how the job he’s done at the helm of the Buffaloes in just two seasons has made him worthy of a more prominent role at a marquee program.

“Florida State, I don’t care about last year, I understand they were undefeated, and then you know what … after their quarterback got hurt, they didn’t get picked for the college football playoffs, and they were salty about it,” Smith said. “Thy didn’t show up and got obliterated by Georgia in a bowl game.

“But they looked awful this year. They should have hired “Prime Time” at Florida State, his alma mater. They should have hired him at Texas A&M, you know, the SEC, they should have hired him.” Along with proposing Texas A&M and Florida State, Smith also believed Sanders deserved the coaching position more than Kaleb DeBoer.

“And I ain’t gonna lie to you, even though I didn’t say anything about it at the time, because the man was a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year and won a national championship, couple of national championships in the NAIA, and had Washington in the national championship game last year, damn it,” Smith continued. “The way Alabama’s looking, I think they should have hired him at Alabama.”

Smith further reiterated his point on Sanders’ qualifications, using those three programs as a way to further his point. And after the job Sanders has done at Colorado, Smith believes the other universities will regret passing up on the former NFL star for their head coaching vacancies.

And I think with the SEC knowing that you got the great teams that you got in it, to have somebody like him who could recruit,” he continued, “I think if youre Texas A&M, I think if youre Florida State, youll rue the day that you didnt hire him as your head coach right now, because nobody saw this coming.

However, Sanders believes the best is yet to come for the Buffaloes. Before Colorado’s win over Cincinnati, Sanders spoke with a 99-year-old fan and assured her that the Buffaloes’ ceiling is much higher than anyone expects.

While speaking with the fan, Sanders promised that Colorado would continue to improve and reach new heights. “It’s cute. It really is,” Sanders said after fulfilling his promise.

“Because we really want that, but that’s not all we’re after. That’s one of the hurdles that we’re jumping over and going over. That’s a tremendous hurdle that we’re happy, we’re excited, but that’s not the end goal for us.”

“That’s the beginning, but we are thankful and appreciative that the hard work is going noticed.” And Sanders’ hard work is being noticed by Smith and the rest of the college football world.
