The road to Crown Jewel heated up on the October 14 edition of WWE Raw as all four world champions appeared on the same program.
Cody Rhodes confronted Gunther, almost coming to blows after they exchanged heated words.
Nia Jax and Tiffany Stratton nearly took over Raw as the WWE women’s champion almost set up a cash-in on Liv Morgan. But Raquel Rodriguez saved the women’s world champion.
Jimmy Uso showed up looking to speak to Jey Uso, hoping for reinforcements in Roman Reigns’ war with The Bloodline, but the intercontinental champion wasn’t interested.
The War Raiders returned with an old name and new aggressive moniker, advancing in a Tag Team Championship Contender Tournament by defeating Alpha Academy.
Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson made an impact on the Women’s Tag Team Championship scene, costing Damage CTRL a match against Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill.
This was a packed show at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. The quiet crowd from a double taping hurt the energy, but the night still stood out thanks to the roster on show.
Champion vs. Champion Matches Are a Bad Idea
WWE has committed to two matches for Crown Jewel at Bad Blood: Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther, and Nia Jax vs. Liv Morgan. It is world champion vs. world champion in the men’s and women’s divisions.
These contests are awkward to build as no star should be better protected than a world champion, yet two will lose on November 2 in Saudi Arabia.
Rhodes was established as the most dominant star in WWE in 2024, but Gunther may have stepped over him since after a dominant run to the World Heavyweight Championship.
Morgan and Jax have the opposite problem. Both are trying to keep their credibility at a time when they have been frequently overshadowed by their challengers.
The losers of these matches will be established as lesser champions, thus devaluing them and the challengers seeking their gold.
Moreover, these championship competitions leave out the potential challengers.
Kevin Owens is on the verge of a breakout heel role on SmackDown but needs to wait for Rhodes to be available to challenge.
Naomi has pinned Jax twice and looks to finally be building momentum. Rhea Ripley is still chomping at the bit to defeat Morgan and taking out both champions in her way.
These stories all have more substance than the championship showdowns that are simply about who is better.
Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson Not Ready for Main Roster Call-Up
Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson have begun a soft main roster call-up, appearing on both SmackDown and Raw recently.
The two Meta-Four members could add valuable talent to an understaffed women’s division, but all indications are that they aren’t ready for that spotlight yet.
While Legend had started to come along in NXT, she is still more prospect than challenger in the brand. Her strength is impressive, but she has yet to put it all together in a more protect environment.
Jackson has even less serious experience and spent significant time on the shelf recently due to a bone break in late 2023.
Both have only worked a few tag team matches on NXT television before this push to the main roster.
This should not be a permanent move, but it should lead to Meta-Four working more often in NXT to get that necessary experience. That way, by the time of the next WWE draft, it will be easier to determine if Legend and Jackson are truly ready.
War Raiders Must Become Top Tag Team Again
The Viking Raiders are no more. Erik and Ivar are once more The War Raiders.
The difference is small, but a branding change gives them a fresh opportunity to establish a reputation.
The War Raiders have never been more dominant than their run in NXT, when they defeated the near-unstoppable Undisputed Era to capture the NXT Tag Team Championships and holding them until they received a main roster call-up.
That call-up did not go as badly as some NXT transitions, but it was never the same level of dominance. Multiple gimmick adjustments have led all the way back to Triple H’s creative focus.
The Raw tag team division is lacking for top names, especially as The New Day struggle to stay on the same page.
Erik and Ivar can rebuild the tag division around them and away from The Judgment Day’s dominance.
Bloodline Drama Bleeding Into Raw is Best For Business
The Bloodline remains SmackDown’s top story, and it is the primary reason to tune in weekly to the blue brand.
It looks like that drama could continue on Raw as well, as WWE begins the march toward Survivor Series: WarGames on November 30.
Especially with both programs on the USA Network, there is no reason not to blend the rosters for the best stories possible.
Jimmy Uso can focus on trying to recruit his brother, Jey, as well as Sami Zayn in the next month for a WarGames reunion.
This will make the red brand more exciting on a weekly basis and give Jey a stronger story to latch onto than his current crop of Intercontinental Championship challengers.
