The founder and inventor of AimPoint, Mark Sweeney has hit back at Lucas Glover’s criticism of the reading technique, labeling his recent comments as “insane”.
Glover hit out at the use of AimPoint whilst appearing on PGA Tour Radio in recent weeks, with the topic of slow play being discussed. Speaking on “The Lucas Glover Show”, the major winner labeled the technique “rude”, commenting: “Statistically, [AimPoint] hasn’t helped anybody make more putts since its inception on the PGA Tour…
“Statistics have borne that out. It’s also kind of rude to be up near the hole, stomping around figuring out where the break is in your feet. It needs to be banned. It takes forever.” Unsurprisingly the man behind AimPoint in Sweeney was less than impressed with Glover’s comments.
Defending the use of AimPoint, and refuting Glover’s claims that it does not help players on the green, Sweeney told Bunkered: “I get it if people just don’t like it. That’s a personal preference, but Lucas was factually wrong when he said it’s never helped anybody, it’s insane.
“AimPoint has been on tour for 17 years, and the first tour player to use it was Scott McCarron. He went from being a very below-average putter to a top 20 putter every year since then.” Sweeney also alluded to the fact that it helped Adam Scott reach No. 1 in the world, as well as LPGA Tour star Lydia Ko.
“It’s not my opinion, this is ShotLink data,” he added. “If you know when a player started AimPoint, and you look before and afters, 90 to 95% improve. It was a false statement. I think it was a malicious statement. And I think he’s going to have to walk it back and retract it in the near future.”

Sweeney is not the only person to play down Glover’s comments. One man who has been successful in using the technique is former Open champion Collin Morikawa, who cheekily suggested that if AimPoint is banned by the PGA Tour then long putters should be too – a piece of equipment used by Glover.
“I have nothing against Lucas, but if we’re banning AimPoint I think we should ban long putters as well,” Morikawa claimed this month. “I don’t know. I guess no one has said it, right?… “From my perspective, AimPoint has 1,000 percent helped me.
“I listen to the announcers sometimes during play and they say why would you AimPoint this, this, and that. It gets a basis of how I read a putt and how I start my lines. It’s just like reading something from behind the hole or behind the ball, that’s how I’m getting my general read for that.”
