Tyrique Stevenson issued a sincere apology for taunting Washington Commanders fans during the final play of Sunday’s 18-15 loss – a costly decision that some argue cost Chicago the game.

With no time left on the clock, Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels danced around the pocket and hurled a 52-yard prayer towards the end zone. Though Stevenson managed to get a hand on the ball, the pass was tipped in the air and into the waiting arms of wide receiver Noah Brown for a touchdown.

But it was Stevenson’s antics in the leadup to the game-winning hail mary that drew the ire of many. In a now-viral clip, he can be seen jawing with members of the crowd as the ball is snapped – only realizing that the play is transpiring once Commanders wide receivers are already downfield.

Taking to social media on the heels of the gut-wrenching loss, Stevenson accepted full accountability for his actions, admitting that he was in the wrong. “To Chicago and teammates, my apologies for lack of awareness and focus,” he wrote. “The game ain’t over until zeros hit the clock. Can’t take anything for granted. Notes taken, improvement will happen. #Beardown.”

The message appeared to resonate with Bears fans, who commended Stevenson for owning up to the mistake. “I appreciate this. Tough moment. Learn from it and grow,” one X user wrote, with another adding: “As a die hard Bears fan I am livid and beyond angry and sad about this loss, but it’s just a game and you’re only human. Accountability and hopes of doing better with an apology. Thank you for that. Keep your head up. Do better and Chicago will have your back.”

A third said: “Actual crazy maturity to own up to it. We still appreciate you week 1 winning us the game we didn’t forget. You got it next game.”

That isn’t to say, however, that Stevenson will get off scot-free following his mental gaffe. While appearing on the ‘Mully & Haugh Show’ on WSCR-AM, Bears wide receiver DJ Moore revealed that video of the 24-year-old’s taunting had made the rounds in Chicago’s locker room.

“A few of the captains were talking about how we need to really address that,” he said on Monday. “I think he put something out about how he was sorry, but we’ve still got to address it as a leadership group and in front of the team.”

Moore admitted that whatever punishment Stevenson receives for his actions is “not up for us to do” as captains, adding that “upstairs is going to have to do what they were going to do.”

Addressing the end to the game, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters: “When you lose a game like that, that’s a tough one to swallow. Was excited how they battled back to have a chance to win that game. It’s important to look at that too.”
