Travis Hunter and Deion Sanders have been told that Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty is the best player in college football as the Heisman Trophy debate heats up.
Sanders, for a second season in a row as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, has championed two-way superstar Hunter as a Heisman Trophy winner. Hunter missed out last year – but 2024 could be his year following a productive final season before heading to the NFL via the 2025 Draft.
Across the season, Hunter recorded 92 catches for 1,152 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He has four interceptions on defense and a rushing touchdown. Following Saturday’s final home game, a blowout 52-0 win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Buffaloes head coach Sanders declared once again that Hunter is the best talent in college football.
“He’s the best player in college football,” Sanders told reporters of Hunter on Friday. “You could find ways to hate, criticize, and condemn him and you won’t come out of that looking professional because now you’re just searching for something.”

However, a Heisman Trophy win for Hunter won’t be clear-cut, as he’s competing with a phenom at running back, Boise State’s Jeanty. He has 2,288 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns and has led Boise State to an 11-1 record.
Jeanty’s standout season also helped Boise State earn a spot in the Mountain West championship game against No. 22 UNLV on Friday. Victory later this week for Jeanty and the Broncos would see them earn a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.
Broncos head coach Spencer Danielson is backing Jeanty to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy in a clear message to Hunter and Sanders. “Ashton Jeanty is the best football player in the country,” Danielson said. “For me, if you’re one of the best players in the country, you play in the championship game.”

Jeanty is also still chasing a legendary Barry Sanders college football record. Sanders holds the FBS records for most rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in a single season, with 2,628 yards and 37 TDs in 1988. Jeanty could have up to five games to rack up the yards and touchdowns.
Hunter and Jeanty have both stated who they think should win the prestigious college award. And unsurprisingly, both are backing themselves. “Kudos to Travis, he’s balling for real,” Jeanty told YouTuber Deestroying in a video posted on his channel.
“He’s doing some stuff we ain’t ever seen nobody do. Personally, I don’t take no offense to it. He’s just speaking his opinion, everybody’s got an opinion. For me, what I’ve been doing hasn’t been done in 36, 37 years, so that’s something special,” Jeanty added. “If I keep that up and break a record that’s been around for 36 years, I feel like you can’t really compete with that.”
