NFL icon Terry Bradshaw may just end up having the last word on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback saga. Initially critical of head coach Mike Tomlin’s decision to side-line Justin Fields for seasoned player Russell Wilson, Bradshaw has since eaten his words.
The legendary commentator previously voiced his skepticism but had to backtrack from his stance as the Steelers‘ fortunes turned, boasting a 10-3 record under Wilson starting at QB towards the year’s end. Earlier in December, Bradshaw came out with an apology, praising Tomlin’s savvy call on FOX: “I just marveled at the fact that Tomlin was able to make this move after sitting Justin Fields down.”
He then admitted: “Their record was four and two, folks. They weren’t losing and Fields wasn’t playing badly. He just thought that Wilson was better suited for their offense and they’d be more explosive. He was exactly right. And you know what? I was wrong. He was right. He knows better than I do.”

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers’ recent three-game losing streak, the 76 year old former player may yet be vindicated. The Steelers have slipped from their top spot in the AFC North to the Baltimore Ravens, with a current record of 10-6 after losses to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Ravens, and the Kansas City Chiefs.
As they navigate this late-season slump, the Steelers are reportedly considering significant changes to their quarterback lineup, with both Wilson and Fields set to become free agents after this season. Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton has also weighed in on the situation, suggesting that it’s time for the Steelers to move on from Wilson.
On ESPN’s First Take, Newton suggested that the Steelers should focus on developing Fields, who is 11 years younger than Wilson. “You bring back Justin Fields though, and you develop him the right way,” Newton said. “Father Time ain’t on our side. He ain’t no spring chicken.”

While it’s not impossible for the Steelers to retain both Wilson and Fields next season, Fields will likely demand a higher salary and a better chance of starting elsewhere due to his age and potential for future development.
Fields, who was initially the backup quarterback for Pittsburgh during preseason, was thrust into the spotlight due to an injury to Wilson. The former Ohio State standout led the Steelers through the early part of the season.
If he’s extended for next season, it’s likely he’ll be given more guarantees as a starter, especially with Wilson’s recent performances suggesting that age may be taking its toll.
