Patrick Mahomes is fully invested in the Kansas City Royals’ postseason push, showing his enthusiasm at their recent game against the New York Yankees in the ALDS. The Royals found themselves down 2-0 heading into the fifth inning of Game 3, but their bats came alive against Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt.
Kansas City quickly tied the game, starting with an infield single by Adam Frazier, followed by a double from Kyle Isbel, and finally a clutch triple by Michael Massey that brought the Royals level.
Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs’ superstar quarterback, was in the stands to witness the action, sporting a custom Royals jersey emblazoned with his signature “Mahomes” and number 15.
When Massey’s triple tied the game, the TBS broadcast caught Mahomes celebrating wildly in a luxury box. He immediately turned to his friend Gehrig Dieter, a die-hard Yankees fan, and playfully began talking trash.
Dieter, a former Chiefs wide receiver who shared the field with Mahomes during their Super Bowl LIV victory, retired in 2022. His Yankee loyalty runs deep—he’s named after the legendary Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig—making the friendly rivalry between the two all the more intense.
Mahomes’ connection to baseball goes beyond being a casual fan. His father, Pat Mahomes Sr., was a former MLB pitcher, and Patrick played baseball himself through his college days at Texas Tech.
Mahomes has also deepened his ties to the Royals through business ventures, as he became a part-owner of the team several years ago. With both personal and professional connections to the Royals, Mahomes’ excitement for the team’s playoff run is no surprise.
