Monday’s NFL Playoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings is under threat due to the wildfires spreading through the region, originating in the community of Pacific Palisades.

The fire spread rapidly after strong winds moved through northwest Los Angeles, with more than 1,000 structures damaged and 30,000 residents being forced to evacuate. The devastation of the Palisades Fire has reportedly reached almost 3,000 acres, and blazes have since started in the Altadena and Sylmar neighborhoods.

California governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency and two people have died, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department chief Anthony Marrone. Although there are still five days until Monday’s playoff game, the NFL has issued a statement.

“The NFL continues to closely monitor developments and will remain in contact with both clubs and the NFLPA,” NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said regarding the wildfires. The game is being hosted at SoFi Stadium, which is located in Inglewood, nearly 10 miles southeast of where the fires are currently burning.

Should the fires continue to make the area unsafe, the NFL may be faced with rescheduling the game or relocating it. However, that would cost the Rams their home field advantage.

The Rams clinched the NFC West title and, with their 10-7 record, secured the No. 4 seed in the NFC. Despite finishing with a far superior 14-3 record, the Vikings settled for the No. 5 seed after missing out on the NFC North title to the 15-2 Detroit Lions.

Due to a tight NFL Playoff schedule, the league will not want to delay the game unless absolutely necessary. However, another Los Angeles team has seen their upcoming game postponed due to the fires. Wednesday’s NHL game between the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames will be rearranged.

“In light of the devastating effects of the wildfires in the Los Angeles area, tonight’s game between the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames at Crypto, com Arena, NHL Game No. 653, has been postponed,” the NHL confirmed in a statement. “The thoughts of the entire NHL family are with the Kings, hockey fans and the people of the Los Angeles area during this difficult time.

“A makeup date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed.” The Kings also posted a statement, added: “Tonight’s game against Calgary has, been postponed. Our hearts are with our entire Los Angeles community, we appreciate the hard working First Responders who are diligently working to contain the fire and protect our community.

“We appreciate the League’s support in keeping our fans, staff, and players safe.”
