Lane Kiffin has not been shy in airing his grievances about Ole Miss’ College Football Playoff snub, but he was brutally put in his place by FOX analyst Joel Klatt on Saturday.

Kiffin, the most active college football coach on social media, fired shots at the playoff committee after two underwhelming games to start the Round of 12. Ole Miss finished just outside the playoff reckoning following a 9-3 regular season campaign, finishing at No. 14 in the rankings.

The Rebels’ head coach has been adamant since that his team was more fitting of a place in the playoff than the likes of Indiana and SMU, who were both handily beaten by Notre Dame and Penn State respectively.

The 10th-seed Hoosiers were outclassed by No. 5 Notre Dame in South Bend on Friday, with a pair of scores in the final minutes bringing a semblance of respectability in a 27-17 defeat. The eleven-seed SMU, meanwhile, was blown out 38-10 by No. 4 Penn State in Happy Valley on Saturday.

Kiffin, 49, was quick to take shots at the committee during both games. “Really exciting competitive game. Great Job!” he said after Notre Dame’s win in a post directed to the College Football Playoff’s official account.

“Way to keep us on the edge of our seats committee… Riveting,” Kiffin added at halftime of the Mustangs’ beatdown at the hands of the Nittany Lions.

Klatt, FOX’s lead college football analyst, had heard enough of Kiffing’s bellyaching about Ole Miss’ absence from the playoff. He replied to Kiffin’s post on Saturday: “If your team played half as well as you tweet you would likely be in.”

Klatt’s post gained huge traction with his followers, racking up more than 50,000 likes in just a couple of hours. ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky was among the thousands who replied, simply writing: “Good Lord Joel.”

While Kiffin is probably right that his team would have put up a better fight than Indiana and SMU, he can also have no complaints about his team missing the playoff.

Although the November victory over No. 2 Georgia was arguably the best of any team this season, defeats to Kentucky (4-8) and Florida (6-5) late in the season saw them lose control of their own destiny.

ESPN analyst Dick Vitale joined Klatt in mocking Kiffin after his barbs at the playoff committee. He posted on Saturday: “Wow Lane Kiffin, I thought you were better than mocking the Hoosiers for having a tough time. Did your Ole Miss ever have a bad game? Look at the film of your Kentucky and Florida games.”

Ole Miss will finish its season in the Gator Bowl against Duke at the Jacksonville Jaguars’ EverBank Stadium on Jan. 2.
