Just over a month after parting ways with head coach Teresa Weatherspoon, the Chicago Sky appear to have found their new leader on the sidelines. The Sky are set to hire Las Vegas Aces assistant Tyler Marsh as their next head coach, according to a Saturday afternoon report from Bobby Marks and Alexa Philippou of ESPN.

Tyler Marsh has been an integral part of the Aces’ coaching staff since joining the team ahead of the 2022 season.

During his time with Las Vegas, Marsh helped guide the Aces to back-to-back WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023, establishing himself as a rising star in the coaching ranks. His work as an assistant coach contributed significantly to the Aces’ success, particularly in terms of player development and game strategy.

Before joining the Aces, Marsh gained valuable experience working in the NBA. He began his professional coaching journey with the Indiana Pacers, where he served as an assistant coach specializing in player development.

His focus on honing players’ skills and maximizing their potential earned him recognition within coaching circles.

Prior to his tenure with the Pacers, Marsh was part of the Toronto Raptors organization, where he served as an assistant video coordinator and player development coach. During his time with the Raptors, Marsh played a role in their 2019 NBA championship run, adding a valuable title-winning experience to his resume.

The Chicago Sky are hoping that Marsh’s championship pedigree and player development expertise can help rejuvenate a team that struggled mightily in the 2024 season.

The Sky finished with a disappointing 13-27 record, their worst mark since 2006, despite considerable optimism surrounding the arrivals of rookie center Kamilla Cardoso and forward Angel Reese. The team’s struggles led to the decision to part ways with Weatherspoon, as the Sky look to build a new foundation for the future.

Marsh will inherit a roster that features a blend of young talent and experienced players, providing him with an opportunity to put his player development skills to good use. The Sky’s young core, led by promising talents like Cardoso and Reese, will benefit from Marsh’s approach, which emphasizes skill development, basketball IQ, and creating a cohesive team culture. His experience working with star players on the Aces and helping them reach their full potential should translate well to his new role in Chicago.

Meanwhile, Marsh’s former team, the Las Vegas Aces, enjoyed another successful season in 2024, finishing with a 27-13 record before falling to the New York Liberty in the league semifinals.

Despite the semifinal loss, the Aces’ consistency and competitiveness underlined the effectiveness of their coaching staff, with Marsh playing a key role in their strategic planning and game execution. His departure from the Aces leaves a gap that will need to be filled as Las Vegas looks to remain a championship contender.

For the Chicago Sky, the hiring of Tyler Marsh represents a fresh start and a chance to establish a new identity. The organization is banking on Marsh’s ability to develop its young stars and guide the team back to playoff contention. His championship experience, both in the WNBA and the NBA, brings a level of credibility and knowledge that could prove crucial in helping the Sky turn their fortunes around.

The upcoming season will be a significant one for Chicago, as they look to move past the disappointments of 2024 and take steps toward building a competitive team for the future.

With Tyler Marsh at the helm, the Sky are hopeful that they have found the right coach to lead them into a new era of success, driven by a focus on growth, resilience, and championship aspirations.
