Chennedy Carter appeared to throw shade at her old teams with her response to Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook’s comments.

The 26-year-old is one of the most coveted free agents in the WNBA after leaving the Chicago Sky having only signed a one-year deal. Carter was a candidate for the Most Improved Player Award after averaging career-highs of 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game, and led the Sky in scoring.

But she now finds herself as a free agent having most recently played for the Wuhan Shengfan in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association. Carter has been proving her worth overseas in the WNBA offseason and has seemingly sent a message to her previous teams.

Carter posted her reaction to another interview by Nuggets star Westbrook in September last year, who told reporters that his previous teams didn’t put him in a position to succeed with his “unique” skill set. “To be honest, (my skill-set) was unique, they just didn’t put me in position to be unique. I was in a position where I was playing not my position,” the nine-time All-Star said.

A clip of the interview was posted onto X, where Carter saw the video and gave her reaction, replying: “ngl I felt this !!!! lol”.

Before spending last season with the Sky, Carter played for the Los Angeles Sparks after being drafted the fourth overall pick by the Atlanta Dream in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The 26-year-old did not play in the WNBA in 2023 after being waived by the Sparks. Instead, Carter played overseas before signing for the Sky last year. Despite being a free agent, Carter has revealed she is interested in playing for Chicago again in 2025. “I love being here. I enjoyed the season. It was fun. It was special. If Chicago wants me back, I’m interested in coming back,” the guard said.

The Sky’s general manager Jeff Pagliocca didn’t commit to the Sky bringing Carter back but was complimentary of the impact she had with the team. “She was very valuable,” he said. “Obviously, she’s a player that can impact the game at the highest level in this league. She’s a player we’re going to make sure we keep an eye on and engage when it’s time.”

Carter is a restricted free agent with the Sky having until mid-January to extend a qualifying offer. However, it’s reported that Chicago plans to make her an offer once teams are allowed to engage free agents, meaning if another team offers a more lucrative deal that the Sky can’t or refuse to match then Carter is free to leave.
