San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the NFC West franchise is willing to pay quarterback Brock Purdy, insisting he can lead them to the Super Bowl again.

Famously the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy was thrown into the limelight when 49ers quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo went down injured. Purdy took over and led San Francisco to the playoffs, winning each start before suffering a torn UCL in the NFC Championship defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles.

In his first full season as the starter, Purdy led the 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII where the Kansas City Chiefs emerged victorious in overtime. Following a disappointing 6-11 campaign for the injury-ravaged 49ers in 2024, Purdy is eligible for an extension.

Given where he went in the draft, Purdy has played for relative peanuts throughout his career. His base salary in 2024 was $985,000, a remarkably low number for a starting quarterback given nine signal-callers around the league earn over $50 million per season.

Despite struggling in a down year for the franchise, Purdy has shown enough over his entire 49ers body of work to earn a raise. The 25-year-old recently claimed he hopes to get it out the way sooner rather than later so he can participate in offseason practices without issue.

It seems Shanahan is on the same page. In Purdy, amid rumors the 49ers could turn elsewhere ahead of paying him top-of-the-market money, Shanahan has his guy. “Brock is the leader of our team,” Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday.

“I’ve loved these three years with Brock. I plan on being with Brock the whole time I’m here. He’s been a stud, he’s a guy I’ve got a lot of confidence in just as a human. But it starts with what he’s done on the field these last two-and-a-half years.

“We’re capable of winning a Super Bowl with him. We just almost did. And I know he’s capable of getting the Niners to the Super Bowl in the future.”

General manager John Lynch agreed, adding: “What we know about Brock is he’s our guy. We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time. He’s done so much for our organization. He’s won big games and had a little tougher task as we all did this year with some of the things that happened this year. We just could never string games where we’re all together. Through that he continued to lead, he continued to play at a high level. So we have every interest in him being around.”

In 2025, Purdy is under contract for just $1.1 million. But he will likely ink an extension this offseason, given both sides are interested in getting a deal done.

Last season, with offensive weapons Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey each missing extended periods of time, Purdy threw for 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, tallying 3,864 yards on a 65.9 percent completion rate. His rating of 96.1 was the lowest of his career to date.
