Thanksgiving in 2023 was a significant turning point for the Brown family, as patriarch Kody Brown navigated the emotional aftermath of his recent breakups with Meri, Janelle, and Christine Brown.

“This is the first Thanksgiving that Robyn and I are having with just our children alone,” Kody, 55, shared in a confessional interview during the Sunday, Oct. 6 episode of Sister Wives. He reflected on the experience, acknowledging both the positive and negative emotions that came with this new chapter in their family dynamic. “We have never had this before,” he noted, indicating the unique nature of the celebration.

While Kody spent the holiday with Robyn and their children, Janelle, 55, and Christine, 52, chose to celebrate together with their kids, embracing the spirit of family. In contrast, Meri, 53, who owns Lizzie’s Heritage Inn, decided to spend Thanksgiving alone, declining Robyn’s invitation to join their gathering. This marked a poignant moment for the family, as they adjusted to the changes in their relationships and the new ways of celebrating together—or apart.

Meri Brown shared her thoughts on the shifting dynamics of the family during the Thanksgiving episode, reflecting on her tentative plans for the holiday. “I had had kind of tentative plans to take a trip to California over Thanksgiving, and that fell through,” she explained to the cameras. Although Robyn reached out to invite her for the celebration, Meri declined, stating, “I’m not going to do that. That’s just weird.”

Kody acknowledged the tension surrounding the holiday gatherings, recalling that last year’s Thanksgiving was “a pleasant experience” when Meri joined him, Robyn, and their children despite their strained relationship. However, he expressed concern about the impact of Meri’s presence on his relationship with Robyn. “Robyn and I don’t behave like a married couple when my other wives are around,” Kody admitted.

He elaborated, saying, “We weren’t acting like a married couple with Meri in our presence. That’s mostly on Robyn.” Kody pointed out that Robyn’s sensitivity to others plays a significant role in their interactions. “When Meri’s there with us at our Thanksgiving, I’m not close with Meri. And now, I’m no longer close with Robyn because Meri’s present, and Robyn wants to be sensitive to Meri.” This highlights the complexity of their relationships and the challenges of navigating family dynamics in the wake of significant changes.
