Shannon Sharpe has shared a private conversation with Kirk Herbstreit after the two ESPN broadcasters became embroiled in a college football dispute.
The two college pundits disagreed over the current state of the Ohio State Buckeyes and it appears that the fallout has spilled beyond just football discussion. Sharpe had questioned Buckeyes head coach Ryan Days job at Herbstreits former school on First Take.
Herbstreit expressed his distaste of the criticism in a public address to First Take for the comments, which caused Stephen A. Smith and Sharpe to react angrily. First Take tried to fire him, they thought he was done, Herbstreit said about the scrutiny directed at Day.
So Im excited to see what they talk about on Monday after this performance. They had him out. They were trying to find replacements. But here he is. Hes still got his hat on. Hes still coaching.
Sharpe spoke about the situation between him and Herbstreit on Night Cap with Chad Ochocinco Johnson. He revealed that the two had talked and Herbstreit had attempted to explain his side of the story. “My point was, and I don’t know if he was talking to me, but I did not think the commentary was warranted, Sharpe said.
Yes, the Buckeyes won. Everyone knows Kirk Herbstreit was schooled at Ohio State. I believe you can stand up for your friends and alma mater without taking a shot at your teammates. And I felt he was taking a shot at First Take. That’s why I’m glad that Herbie reached out.”
The former Denver Broncos tight end added: “We were able to put this whole situation behind us. I know he is happy that Ohio State won and is good friends with Ryan Day. However, being good friends and then taking a shot are different situations. I just needed clarity: Are we teammates or not? That is all I needed to know. Because if we are not teammates, then lets throw caution to the wind.
Following the former Ohio State quarterbacks comments, Sharpe previously issued a defensive reply on First Take. “I am going to be a teammate. I will let it slide since everyone’s at ESPN, especially because you have not taken the rocks you have taken. I would have lit them up, the three-time Super Bowl winner said.
“Congratulations, Ohio State. You won. However, if we are going to be on the same team or work on the same network, then don’t do that. Kirk, Chris Fowler, I promise you, if you ever mention anything about any platform that I am on again, talking about, I wonder what they are going to say in negativity. I promise you ESPN doesn’t have enough bosses to keep me off y’all for what I am going to say.
Smith also gave an impassioned reply to Herbstreit after the comments as he too hit back at the claims made about him. Kirk Herbstreit, First Take tried to get him fired. That is not true. I did. Not First Take. That was me, Stephen A. Im going to own that, Smith said. And what did I say specifically, Kirk Herbstreit, because youve got to quote me accurately, my brother.
I watch you on College Football GameDay. I dont misquote you, dont misquote me. What I said was, this man Ryan Day, if he doesnt get a national championship he should go, even with a 66-10 record.
