Filming a sex scene isn’t always as steamy as it sounds!
Kate Winslet, Kristen Stewart, and Jamie Dornan have all shared their surprisingly awkward experiences while portraying intimate moments with their co-stars. You might think that filming such scenes would be easier if your on-screen partner is also your real-life love, but that wasn’t the case for Riley Keough and her husband, Ben Smith-Petersen.
From moments of genuine discomfort to the hilariously awkward, these celebrities have opened up about the challenges of faking intimacy to create believable chemistry for their characters. Dive into their stories of the good, the bad, and the “grotesquely uncomfortable” experiences that come with filming these intimate scenes.
Phoebe Dynevor opened up to Harper’s Bazaar in 2021 about the extensive preparation that went into filming the seemingly effortless sex scenes with Regé-Jean Page in Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton. She described the process as akin to choreographing a stunt, explaining, “It looked real, but we’ve got padding on.” Dynevor highlighted how new techniques have transformed the filming of intimacy scenes, noting, “I can’t believe really how new this all is, because it just changed the game.”
The presence of the show’s intimacy coach, Lizzy Talbot, was crucial in helping the actors feel at ease. “We felt super safe, and it just meant that when we got on set, we already knew exactly what we’re doing,” she shared. Dynevor elaborated on the meticulous blocking they did, saying, “I knew exactly where his hand was going to go and at what point. So it just meant that there wasn’t any room for a director to go, ‘Oh, I want to see this now.’” This level of preparation allowed them to focus on their performances while maintaining a sense of safety and professionalism on set.
