Oleksandr Usyk showed his real character after he made an admission about a Rolex watch he wore just days after winning millions following his victory over Tyson Fury.
The undisputed heavyweight world champion was spotted with an interesting-looking watch just days after his repeat win against The Gypsy King. Usyk retained the WBA, WBC, WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight titles with a unanimous decision victory over Fury, earning a reported $ 86 million in the process.
But Usyk showed that his influx of riches hasnt changed his mentality. During an interview with United44, Usyk showed off his expensive clothing and jewelry before waving what appeared to be a Rolex toward the camera.
However, Usyk confessed about the watchs authenticity as he admitted it was a knockoff Rolex. Despite nobody questioning whether the watch was real considering the fortune the 37-year-old has amassed throughout his career, Usyk chose to come clean.
I was boasting a little and showed the cameraman my watch,” he said, laughing. It’s a Chinese Rolex. I was in Turkey for training and saw guys selling Rolexes on the beach. I thought if I bought one, no one would guess that it was a fake. So I bought it for $100.
Usyks victory saw him take home more than the estimated $70 million that Fury earned following only the second defeat of his career after the first fight defeat in May. The Saudi investment in boxing has brought a catalog of record-smashing and money-spinning fights, including Usyks rematch victory over Anthony Joshua in August 2022, which provided Ukraine with his first fight in the Middle East.
The 37-year-old is no stranger to fighting away from home due to the current invasion of Russia into Ukrainian territory, making hosting a bout in his homeland impossible. But even early in his career, Usyk got used to fighting on the road. Usyk won the WBO cruiserweight title in Poland before retaining the belt in the US. His continued domination of the division took him to Germany, Latvia, Russia, and England to defend and win the other cruiserweight belts.
Usyks “home” fight saw him retain his heavyweight belts against Daniel Dubois in Poland having made the step into the heavyweight division in the US and England before his second fight against Joshua in Saudi Arabia paved the way for the Fury contests.
The relationship between Usyk and Fury outside of the ring appears to be one of mutual respect for each others skills and achievements. Usyks reaction to Fury following their grueling fight proved so as he praised Fury for pushing him to new levels.
“I very much respect this guy because I think he’s very tough, my opponent. Tyson Fury makes me strong, Usyk said. Tyson is a great opponent, big and tough. He’s a good man. Tyson does a lot of talk. It’s just for show. I respect him very much. Twenty-four rounds, listen now, it’s already history.”
