New York made unfavorable history Monday when all of the city’s teams playing in the four major American sports leagues all lost.
On Monday, the New York Yankees, New York Knicks, New York Giants and New York FC, of MLS fame, all were in action and surprisingly, all four teams lost their respective matchups. In doing so, New York made history as the first metropolitan city to lose a game in MLB, the NBA, NFL and MLS on the same day, regular or playoffs.
Perhaps the most consequential of the losses Monday was the Yankees’ 4-2 loss in Game 3 of the 2024 World Series. Failing to win a game in Los Angeles, the Yankees needed one win to breathe some life into their World Series as a 3-0 series deficit almost always assured a series defeat.
And the Yankees came out flat against a Dodgers team looking to end the series in New York. Los Angeles star Freddie Freeman put the Dodgers in front early in the first inning, blasting a two-run home run over the short porch in right field to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
By the time the Yankees broke their scoring seal, it was the ninth inning, with Alex Verdugo hitting a home run to give some life to the team heading into Game 4. With the Yankees down to their final game, the “Bronx Bombers” will have to do what it can to extend the series to bring it back to Los Angeles for a pivotal Game 5 at Dodger Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Giants also saw their season slowly slip away after another loss, this time against the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the score tied at nine apiece heading into halftime, the Giants needed a strong showing if they wanted to keep their hopes alive for a potential run to the playoffs.
Instead, the Steelers scored 17 points in the second half, putting away any chance of a comeback. In the process, Pittsburgh all but ended New York’s chances of making the playoffs, as the Giants are tied with the New Orleans Saints for the second-worst record (2-6) in the NFC and ahead of the Carolina Panthers (1-7).
The Knicks dropped to 1-2 on the season after losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 110-104. Led by Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell, the Cavaliers proved to be too much to handle for the Knicks as the latter attempted to better integrate newly-acquired superstar Karl-Anthony Towns into the fold.
That said, the Knicks’ season just began so there is ample time for the team to get on the right page by the time the playoffs roll around in April 2025. After reaching the Eastern Conference semifinals last season, anything less than a trip to the conference finals and beyond could be seen as a failed season for Knicks fans.
Lastly, New York FC fell to FC Cincinnati, 1-0, in the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. Cincinnati took a 1-0 series lead thanks to a header by Yamil Asad in the 51st minute after being left unmarked in the box.
Throughout the match, it appeared as if Cincinnati were the aggressors, as many of the metrics favored the home team. With the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs being a best-of-three series, New York FC has one more chance to level the series before the end of their season.
In all, it was a forgettable night in New York sports. However, the Yankees can force a trip back to Los Angeles with a masterful showing against the Dodgers in Game 4.
