Floridians Urged to Stay Vigilant as Hurricane Milton Weakens but Expands, Increasing Risks

Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center, cautioned Floridians against complacency as Hurricane Milton is expected to weaken in category while simultaneously doubling in size. He explained that this expansion could pose a greater threat, affecting a wider area and increasing the risks of storm surge, winds, and heavy rainfall.

“In some ways, it’s actually worse. It affects more people,” Brennan stated, highlighting the potential for widespread destruction. He warned of extended impacts, including power outages and wind damage that could last for several days.

Brennan also noted that rainfall totals could be extreme, with some areas along and just north of the storm’s track potentially receiving up to 18 inches of rain in isolated locations. Residents are advised to remain prepared and attentive to updates as the storm approaches.
