At one point, the now 72-year-old Bob Costas was one of the most revered broadcasters in the entire sports world.
The former voice of NBC was a staple of everything from Olympic coverage to the NBA Finals and the World Series. In 1994, he masterfully toggled Game 5 of the 1994 NBA Finals with the concurrent OJ Simpson “White Bronco” car chase.
However, many fans accused Costas of being particularly sleepy during Saturday night’s ALDS matchup between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees. There was plenty to be excited about: the Yankees thrilling 6-5 win was marked by five lead changes, the most in a single game in MLB postseason history.

While Costas certainly wasn’t in his 90s prime on Saturday, he was not nearly as bad as fans on X were making him out to be. “Bob Costas is a legend, but please take him off of these playoff broadcasts, this is brutal,” tweeted one fan.
Barstool host Jeff Lowe added: “Bob Costas nearly fell asleep on the call.” Fellow Barstool host Barstool Are Dee Tee said: “I can’t believe we still have Bob Costas near microphones. He’s awful.”
Following a wall-scraping home run by Yankees second baseman Gleybor Torres, popular Yankees fan and Barstool editor-in-chief Eric Hubbs tweeted “My team is losing in a playoff game and I’ve got Bob Costas complaining that not every foot of the wall has a measurement number on it.”

Ironically, the Yankees have historically performed very well when Costas is on the call. In playoff games since 1995, New York is now 27-8 with him at the mic.
Costas and his co-commentator Ron Darling had some strong moments. Following a Shohei Ohtani homerun in the Los Angeles Dodgers game, Darling referenced an interview Ohtani gave in English earlier in the day.
This prompted Costas to recount an all-time story where he interviewed Ichiro Suzuki in the Japanese star’s first-ever English interview. The veteran announcer asked Suzuki what his favorite American expression is.

After taking a few moments, the outfielder answered: “In Kansas, it’s hotter than two rats in a ******* wool sock…I have some bad teammates.”
A strong bullpen led the Yankees to the victory. After ace Gerrit Cole struggled through 5 innings, four New York relievers didn’t allow an earned run the rest of the way.
