Shelby Daniele’s cause of death has been confirmed by the father of one of her devastated teammates.
The Cal Poly track and field star died suddenly last Wednesday and it was revealed by her teammate Eva Brandenburg’s father, Brian, that the 23-year-old died from a brain aneurysm. Daniele had recently graduated with a master’s degree earlier in June after graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture in 2023.
In a tribute post, Brian shared Daniele’s cause of death and explained how the track star played a pivotal role in his daughter’s decision to attend Cal Poly. He also told other parents to be mindful of their children in a heartbreaking message following Daniele’s death.

On social media, he wrote: “The young lady that was the driving force in Eva’s decision to run Track at Cal Poly, Shelby Daniele, passed away last night of a brain aneurism (sic),” Brian posted, [h/t The Daily Mail]. “Completely heartbreaking … hug your children every time you can and tell them you love them every day. Please say a prayer for Shelby and her family.”
Along with Brian’s message, Jessica Reichman, Daniele’s sister, also posted a message on social media. “My worst nightmare happened this morning, September 25, 2024,” her post began. “My sister, my best friend left Earth to be with God. Too soon and too fast and I will never understand why but she is where she is supposed to be now.
“I so wish I could have lived the rest of our lives together, but things will be different now and we will get through it. You were the light in everyone’s life and it’s hard to believe. I can’t talk to you anymore. I love you forever baby girl.”

While competing for the Mustangs, Daniele broke the university’s indoor 200m record, posting a time of 24.69 seconds. Additionally, Daniele held the record for the fastest indoor 60m time at 7.62 seconds and the 100m at 11.58 seconds.
The university also released a statement on social media after Daniele’s death: “Shelby was an exceptional student-athlete on the Cal Poly track and field team for five years, graduating from Cal Poly this spring with her master’s in agriculture with distinction.
“She was a six-time All-Big West honoree, a two-time Big West champion, a team captain and is a school record holder, but more importantly she was an incredible teammate and leader. She cared deeply for those around her, had a remarkable heart and was a role model for so many. Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by everyone in the Cal Poly community. Our condolences go out to her family and friends.”
Daniele’s former track and field coach at Buchanan High School Brian Weaver, who saw the talented track star win the CIF Championship for the 200m race in 2019, also spoke of her character and what type of person she was.
“I think she meant everything to so many people, just her spirt, her character, her excitement and love and passion,” Weaver said, per CBS47. “It was a great athlete-coach experience for me because we had to get through some things together and that is a memory that I will have forever.
“She had a passion for everything: Work, competing, friends, family. You name it. And she gave her heart for that. Family was very important to her and just seeing her accelerate, especially in the last few years of her time there, it was special.”
