Chicago Bears defensive back Tyrique Stevenson was seen taunting Washington Commanders fans after the ball had been snapped on Jayden Daniels’ Hail Mary play – before inadvertently causing the pass to be completed for a walk-off touchdown.

Stevenson had clearly not been paying attention as Daniels started scrambling to get the throw off before the Bears defensive back could get into position. Being late on the play while provoking Commanders fans, Chicago’s cornerback left his man, Noah Brown, wide open in the endzone.

Unfortunately for the ex-Georgia and Miami standout, he wasn’t done making mistakes. After turning his head, Stevenson rushed toward Brown and jumped to prevent the score – only to tip the ball back into the endzone where the Commanders receiver stood with no one around him.

All-22 footage appears to confirm that Stevenson’s role had been to stick with Brown on the play. Instead, Stevenson looked to play the ball instead of his man, making it possible for the wideout to make the catch.

The pass would not have landed in the endzone even if it had been caught, but Stevenson’s backward tip meant it would go into the paint where Brown was waiting to snatch it and immediately end the game. The touchdown came as the Bears looked like they were about to steal a win at the Commanders’ field, scoring 15 unanswered points to bounce back from 12-0 down.

The second-year cornerback is a starter for the Bears following an impressive rookie season in 2023. But he has suffered somewhat of a slump since the start of the current camopaign – with this recent play sure to have his coaches furious when they watch it back.

After becoming aware of the incredible footage, posted by Washington Commanders fan Joe Abdo, Bears fans took to social media to voice their anger towards Stevenson.

One fan said: “Tyrique… man, you talk way too much. Focus on the game man. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets benched,” as another said: “Leave Tyrique Stevenson in Washington and trade him for a pack of starburst,” while a third said: “That is inexcusable, ridiculous and selfish. Idiotic play.”

Later on Sunday, Stevenson apologized for the costly mistakes he made during the game. “To Chicago and teammates my apologies for lack of awareness and focus …” he wrote on X.

“The game ain’t over until zeros hit the clock. Can’t take anything for granted. Notes taken, improvement will happen.”
