Caitlin Clark’s reported decision to snub Unrivaled to enjoy her offseason leaves two wild-card spots open for the startup 3v3 basketball league.

Recently, it was reported by sources around the 22-year-old’s camp that she would not be joining the league, despite a massive offer. With Clark more than likely not playing in the league, that leaves two spots open on two of the teams: The Lunar Owls and the Phantom.

Currently, the Lunar Owls – coached by DJ Sackman – have five players with Natasha Cloud, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Allisha Gray, Naphessa Collier and Shakira Austin. On the other hand, the Phantom will be led by Adam Harrington as Jackie Young, Marina Mabrey, Tiffany Hayes, Satou Sabally and Brittney Griner take the floor.

With two open spots remaining, WNBA legends Nneka Ogwumike and Diana Taurasi could be the most likely players approached for the league. Ogwumike is a WNBA champion and a former MVP, being one of the driving forces that helped lead the Seattle Storm to the playoffs last season.

That said, Ogwumike said she would like to take the offseason to take some time for herself, stating: “Making sure that I put vacation time on my calendar, I’m not good at doing that. Something might pop up, an event or something, and I’ll push that [vacation time] away to do that other thing.”

Though she would like to get more time away from the court, Ogwumike could be tempted to play basketball to keep her skills sharp. In the same vein, Taurasi could be willing to the same as she continues to consider retiring from the sport.

Taurasi, wildly known as the greatest WNBA player of all time, is the midst fo deciding whether she wants to continue playing or if it is time to hang up her sneakers. Having played in the league for 20 years, Taurasi is mulling over her decision.

“I have not taken it lightly. I think about it every day. You know, I’m still in deep thought about it. I want to make the right decision, you know, and I’m just taking my time a little bit,” she said. “And you know, sometimes when the season ends, the last thing you want to think about is the next season.”

Playing in Unrivaled could give Taurasi a better understanding of whether she is capable of playing another grueling season in the WNBA. Additionally, an unlikely name to join the league is Sabrina Ionescu. She is currently rehabbing from a torn UCL injury in her shooting hand, which she sustained in Game 4 of the 2024 WNBA Finals.

One notable name not included in Unrivaled’s inaguaral season is three-time MVP A’ja Wilson. Wilson, a massive draw in her own right, explained that while she excited to see a women’s basketball league start in the United States as an alternative for players leaving to play overseas, she would not be partaking this year.

In September, Wilson revealed that while she is keeping the door open to join the league in the future, she will be staying stateside to recover. “Interested? I’m not going to completely cut it out, because you never know,” Wilson said, according to Yahoo! Sports. “But I will not be in Unrivaled this year.

“I think that kind of squashes a lot of … people kept tagging me. But I love what it’s doing for my teammates, and it’s creating another avenue for players to play and stay in America. But I will not be doing that. I will be chilling.”
