NFL legend Tom Brady has admitted that he would have handled the situation “differently” after Daniel Jones asked to be released from his New York Giants contract.

The 27-year-old quarterback departed MetLife Stadium following six seasons after losing his starting place to understudy Tommy DeVito this campaign. After falling down the pecking order, he decided to ask for his time with the Giants to be cut short during a meeting with front office executives.

Jones had formed part of a team that had established an underwhelming 2-8 record so far this term, with the player dropped earlier this month following five consecutive defeats. However, seven-time Super Bowl winner Brady has now revealed his disapproval after the QB requested his release from his $160million agreement.

He said on Fox Sports: “I don’t know how the whole situation went down, but to think that you would ask to be released from a team that committed a lot to you is maybe different than I would have handled that.

Giants owner John Mara claimed that the star came to see him to seek a parting of ways, with the team president ultimately granting Jones his wish. Since then, the ace has landed a move to the Minnesota Vikings until the end of the season as part of a reported $375,000 deal.

Reflecting on these developments, Brady said: “I always felt I wanted to get the trust and respect of my teammates regardless of the situation, knowing that I was trying to be the best that I could for the team because that was the most important thing. There’s just some different things that happen in the NFL, and everyone makes individual choices.

Daniel Jones parted ways with the Giants after being sent to the bench following last week’s defeat to the Carolina Panthers

“I think we all at different points in our career face different challenges. I faced them in college and some things didn’t go the way I wanted, but the people that mattered most to me were the guys in the locker room. I showed up every day. I don’t care if they asked me to be scout team safety [or] be scout team quarterback… I was gonna do whatever I can to help the team win.”

During a press conference, Jones said: “Of course, this season has been disappointing for all and, of course, I wish I could have done more. I’m 100 percent accountable for my part. I did not play well enough, consistently enough, to help the team get the results.”

Meanwhile, Giants owner Mara gave his recollections of the player asking to be released before paying tribute to the outbound star. He said: “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team.

“Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
