Minnesota Governor Tim Walz couldn’t help but poke fun at the Chicago Bears on the heels of their gut-wrenching 18-15 loss to the Washington Commanders.
Over the weekend, the Bears appeared to put the finishing touches on a hard-fought victory when running back Roschon Johnson scored a one-yard touchdown with 25 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams soon after connected with tight end Cole Kmet to put Chicago up by three points, 15-12.
But with no time left on the clock, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels danced around the pocket and hurled a 52-yard prayer towards the end zone. The pass was tipped in the air by Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson and into the waiting arms of wide receiver Noah Brown for the game-winning touchdown.

It didn’t take long for the Bears trash talk to start rolling in. While speaking at a rally in Manitowoc, Wisconsin on Monday, Walz – the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris – aimed a hilarious dig at Chicago. “So look, we’re leaving it all on the field, unlike the Bears I might add,” Walz said with a wide grin.
Walz’s lighthearted shot should come as no surprise, considering the Minnesota resident’s allegiance to the Vikings, the Bears’ NFC North rival. The comment was additionally well received by those in attendance at the campaign stop in Wisconsin – many of whom are likely Green Bay Packers fans.
This isn’t the first time that Walz has used football as an attempt to appeal to voters. Earlier this month, he claimed that the 2024 presidential election would be decided by the NFC North.

“This year, the Senate, the White House and the Super Bowl are all going through the NFC North. Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and Minnesota are going to have a lot to say with that,” he said, per The Chicago Tribune.
Over the weekend, Walz – a former defensive coordinator at Mankato West High School – also faced off against Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a friendly game of Madden NFL 25 that was streamed live on Twitch.
The Bears, meanwhile, have come under fire following their soul crushing defeat, with many blaming Stevenson for surrendering the last-second hail mary. In a now-viral clip, the 24-year-old can be seen jawing with members of the crowd as the ball is snapped – only realizing that the play is transpiring once Commanders wide receivers are already downfield.
Taking to social media on the heels of the gut-wrenching loss, Stevenson issued a sincere apology for his actions, admitting that he was in the wrong. “To Chicago and teammates, my apologies for lack of awareness and focus,” he wrote on X. “The game ain’t over until zeros hit the clock. Can’t take anything for granted. Notes taken, improvement will happen. #Beardown.”
