Sarah Michelle Gellar was seen in public for the first time since the sudden death of her friend and Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Michelle Trachtenberg, who played her younger sister Dawn in the beloved series.
Michelle was found dead in her New York City apartment on February 26. She was just 39 years old. Her cause of death remains undetermined, but it has been reported that the actress recently underwent a liver transplant and may have been experiencing complications.
The two actresses remained close after working together, with Sarah Michelle posting a heartbreaking tribute to her friend on Instagram the day after she died.
Sarah Michelle was spotted in Los Angeles leaving a Beverly Hills hair salon on Friday, just two days after her friend passed away.
The Cruel Intentions star stepped out wearing a lacy black top paired with a black cardigan with green cargo pants and sneakers. She held her phone in one hand and wore a black leather bag across her body. Her eyes were hidden behind large dark sunglasses.
On Thursday, the 47-year-old shared a series of photos on Instagram of the two stars together with the caption: “‘Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you. The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live for you’.”
The photo carousel included sweet snaps of the two stars together on and off set, including one of Michelle holding a baby, possibly one of Sarah Michelle’s children.
Alyson Hannigan, who also starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Willow, took to Instagram to mourn the loss of their co-star, writing: “I am deeply saddened by the news of Michelle’s passing. She brought a loving energy to the set of Buffy. My thoughts are with Michelle’s family and friends.”
Several other Buffy stars expressed their grief online, including James Marsters, Emma Caulfield, and David Boreanaz.
A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is reportedly in the works at Hulu with Sarah Michelle set to reprise the titular role and Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao slated to direct. Before her death, fans had been questioning whether or not Michelle would reprise her role as Dawn Summers.
