Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have made their views clear after welcoming new investors to the club.

The Hollywood stars said they had been “blown away” by the New York-based Allyn family, which made its fortune in medical manufacturing. The pair also revealed they have personally met with family representatives, praising their “kindness and commitment”.

The announcement was made on Wednesday that the former owners of medical firm Welch Allyn Inc had acquired a minority stake in the League One club. The company was owned by the family for more than 100 years until selling up in 2015 for $2 billion and turning its attention to investments.

Reynolds and McElhenney struggled to hide their glee in a joint statement as they said the investment would help them achieve their “lofty ambitions” which include taking the Red Dragons into the Premier League.

“Wrexham has earned the world’s attention and we are focused on bringing on board world-class partners to help with the next phase of our growth,” the Wrexham co-owners said. “We have been fortunate to get to know the Allyn family and we are blown away by their intelligence, kindness and commitment. They are exactly the type of partners we will need for this amazing endeavor.”

The investment has been made via Red Dragon Ventures LLC, a new company set up by the Allyn family and Reynolds and McElhenney. The firm was also involved in another major announcement yesterday as it was used as a vehicle to secure a majority stake for the two actors in the Wrexham Lager company.

Eric Allyn, manager and chief investment officer of the Allyn’s family office, said: “For more than a century, our family has focused on building great companies, while also uplifting wonderful communities. Our decades-long efforts in the Syracuse region are similar to what Rob and Ryan have started in Wrexham. We view Red Dragon Ventures as a vehicle to invest in a world-class football club, and, importantly, in the welcoming community of Wrexham.”

Reynolds and McElhenney completed their takeover of Wrexham in February 2021. Since then, there has been plenty of success on the pitch, with the team achieving back-to-back promotions in the last two seasons under the management of Phil Parkinson.

The two friends now appear to be expanding their investment in the wider Wrexham community through the acquisition of Wrexham Lager, which will soon be available in the United States and Canada.

They revealed the news in a YouTube video in which they said they are “Literally speechless,” communicating only through telegraph keys. “As co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC we have learned a lot,” McElhenney and Reynolds said in a statement.

“The connection between club and community, the intricacies of the offside rule and the occasional need for beer – especially after finance meetings. Wrexham Lager has a 140-year-old recipe and a storied history and we’re excited to help write its next chapter.”
