Robert Saleh seemingly couldn’t stay away from football for long – but he isn’t ready to discuss his ousting from the New York Jets just yet.

On Wednesday, Saleh was spotted on the Packers’ practice field – less than three weeks since the ex-Jets head coach was fired by team owner Woody Johnson. Discussing his addition to the staff, Green Bay HC Matt LaFleur joked that he encouraged him to take some time off from the NFL on the heels of his firing.

“Well, I told him to do that, but he didn’t listen,” LaFleur said. “So, yeah, I just think it speaks to how much he loves the game of football and was, obviously it’s tough when it gets kind of taken away from you. And I don’t think it was the right decision [to fire Saleh], but that’s not for me to say, so.”

It remains to be seen what Saleh’s exact role will be with the Packers, who’ve surrendered the 10th-fewest points per game this season at 20.4. During the first half of Green Bay’s practice, he floated along the sidelines while the team’s offense was on the field.

“Yeah, I think it helps,” LaFleur said of Saleh’s presence. “Having a defensive mind talking offense and helping us with things he might be able to see, kind of similar scheme stuff, things the defense might be looking for, it helps.

“I think he’s got an elite defensive mind. But that’s why I want him on the offensive side, so he can help us attack the defenses.”

Though Saleh didn’t speak to reporters, LaFleur revealed that he’d remain in Green Bay through Thursday – adding that his position on the team would be “fluid.” The 45-year-old’s lack of media availability was probably for the best, considering he likely dodged a barrage of questions regarding his former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.

The connection – or lack thereof – between Saleh and Rodgers had been a topic of fierce discussion in the leadup to the former’s dismissal. Yet the pair repeatedly refuted rumors that they were not on good terms, with the signal-caller fiercely pushing back on the notion that he had anything to do with his firing.

“As far as any of the ridiculous allegations out there, I’m not going to spend more than one sentence in response to it,” Rodgers said during his annual appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show.’ “And that is that I resent any of those accusations because they are patently false. It’s interesting the amount of power that people think that I have, which I don’t. I love Robert.

“When it comes to me, I don’t feel like I need to defend myself or say anything,” Rodgers continued. “There’s always going to be narratives out there and conversations around what I think and how much power I have and how much influence I have. It’s not something I worry about – it’s really not.”
