Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Holden Trent has passed away, the team announced. He was 25 years old.
On Saturday, the MLS club confirmed the news of his death in an official statement posted to their website. No cause of death has been made public as of writing.
“The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent. While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better,” the message read.

“He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication, and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends.
“Out of respect to Holden’s friends and family, there will be no further statements at this time and ask that their privacy is respected as they grieve.”
MLS Commissioner Don Garber expressed a similar sentiment, writing separately: “Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Union and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic passing of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent.

Taking to social media, Trent’s family thanked his supporters for sending well-wishes during this difficult time. ‘We want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Holden passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and friends,” a post shared to the keeper’s Instagram page read.
“Details on services and celebration of life are forthcoming. Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden.”
After being selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, Trent logged two seasons with Philadelphia and appeared in six games for the team’s MLS Next Pro affiliate – Philadelphia Union II. The Greensboro, North Carolina native most recently took the field against New York Red Bulls II back in June, during which he recorded two saves and surrendered four goals.
Over five starts for Union II in league play during the 2023 campaign, Trent amassed 20 saves and registered a 62.5 save percentage while letting up 12 goals.
Trent started off at West Virginia University, but found a permanent home at High Point University where he played for three seasons. The team captain finished his collegiate career sixth among active NCAA Division I goalkeepers for shutouts (22) in the least amount of games played (52), and helped propel the Panthers to their first NCAA Tournament victory in program history – a 2-0 win over UNC.
