Patrick Mahomes overcame an injury scare to inspire the Kansas City Chiefs to an overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on ‘Monday Night Football’.
During the prime time showdown at Arrowhead Stadium, Mahomes threw four touchdowns – three of which came on third down – to lead the Chiefs to a 30-24 victory over the Bucs. Mahomes finished with 230 yards on 28 of 35 passing, and he found recent trade acquisition DeAndre Hopkins with two key touchdown passes as Kansas City moved to 8-0.
On his touchdown pass to Samaje Perine, the two-time NFL MVP appeared to be in some discomfort. After tossing an underarm pass to Perine, Mahomes immediately pulled up after appearing to land awkwardly, and he was assisted from the field by Chiefs staff following what seemed to be a non-contact injury.

Mahomes needed assistance after throwing a seven-yard touchdown pass to Perine with 14:14 remaining in the fourth quarter The two-time MVP was taken to the medical tent but emerged swiftly after to huge cheers around Arrowhead Stadium. He was confirmed to be dealing with an ankle injury, but Mahomes immediately returned to the game to provide a massive boost to the Chiefs.
The 29-year-old returned to action for the Chiefs’ next possession. While backup veteran quarterback Carson Wentz was preparing to go into the game, Mahomes continued.
The three-time Super Bowl champion sustained an ankle injury in last week’s 27-20 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, but also didn’t miss a snap on that occasion. While he was on the team injury report ahead of the Bucs clash, Mahomes was not limited in practice and was expected to feature throughout the ‘Monday Night Football’ contest.

On a rainsoaked evening in Missouri, Harrison Butker’s 40-yard field goal gave the Chiefs the lead before Rachaad White returned to his hometown and delivered a touchdown. Hopkins then hauled in a close-range touchdown pass to give the Chiefs the lead in the second half, but the Bucs hit back in the third quarter.
Baker Mayfield picked out tight end Cade Otton for an 11-yard touchdown to reclaim the lead, and Chase McLaughlin’s 17-yard field goal extended the Bucs lead to seven points. Perine’s score tied the game before Hopkins clinched the game-winning touchdown on a five-yard reception.
The Bucs drove to try and win the game late in the fourth quarter, but the Chiefs defense – which has been so strong in 2024 – forced a punt, allowing for Kareem Hunt to steadily take time off the clock and force the Bucs to spend timeouts. However, the Chiefs offense stuttered, and gave Mayfield and co. two and a half minutes with a single timeout to push for victory.
Mayfield orchestrated a fine drive, hitting the likes of Trey Palmer and Sterling Shepard to move into Chiefs territory. He then found Ryan Miller on a one-yard touchdown to send the game to overtime, where the Chiefs emerged victorious as Hunt rushed into the end zone from two yards out.
