In the closing seconds of the Philadelphia Eagles’ 20-16 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, head coach Nick Sirianni appeared to have a contentious moment with the home crowd at Lincoln Financial Field.
Sirianni was seen on camera gesturing toward fans and pointing to his ear in a taunting manner:
Sirianni later told reporters that he was “just excited” when asked about the exchange.
“Just excited, Sirianni said. “Just excited to get the win. Just excited to get the win. Our fans had created a couple of false starts that helped us win this football game.”
Sirianni was a target of vociferous disdain from fans earlier in Sunday’s game. Per Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports, as the Eagles headed into halftime tied 10-10 with the Browns, a contingent of fans was heard chanting “Fire Nick” amid a sea of boos.
Still, a four-point win against a Cleveland team that entered Sunday with a 1-4 record was enough for Sirianni to fire back at the home crowd as Philadelphia improved to 3-2.
Prior to Sunday’s game, Sirianni showed off his new shaved-head look and said he hoped to shake things up coming out of the team’s bye week.
“I know we’ve done the right things to put ourselves in position this week. We’ll keep tinkering with different things to try to put our guys in position. We did different drills. We had a couple different things with equipment out there,” he said, per John Clark of NBC Sports. “Because all we care about is that the product that we put on the field is a reflection of the things we do here. And our guys have worked really hard at it.”
Sirianni’s different approach appeared to pay off for now, and Philadelphia could be on the verge of a strong run, as its next three games are against teams with records below .500.
The Eagles will look for their second straight win next Sunday when they visit the New York Giants (2-3) in and NFC East clash.
