New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave was placed on a stretcher and carted off the field after suffering a brutal hit to the head against the Carolina Panthers.
Olave was chasing a loose pass from quarterback Derek Carr when being sandwiched by two Panthers defensemen, with safety Xavier Woods colliding with the receiver. Olave has three documented concussions in the NFL, and will now navigate protocol once again after being examined.
The Saints have confirmed that Olave has movement in all extremities and is undergoing further evaluation at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. Players from both teams gathered around Olave as he was attended to by the medical staff, dropping to one knee to show respect for the receiver.
Carr had only just returned from an oblique injury, but now faces a spell without his top wide receiver. Former Saints receiver Michael Thomas instantly began posting on social media, blaming Carr for the incident.

“Derek Carr for you I had told ya’ll s— sad,” Thomas wrote on X. “Dude scary and panic and just throw the ball. Get him the f out of here he so a–.
“That year his buddy went 1st team all pro in 2022 he needed 180 targets just to catch 100 passes. He is a–. Dude tried to lie and say I was jealous of them making Chris WR1 whole time he can’t even get him a decent ball.
“He need his a– whooped. They fired all them coaches trying to cover his flaws up he still doing the same s—.”
Olave is entering his third season in the league, after he was selected 11th overall by the Saints in the 2022 NFL Draft. Olave scored four touchdowns in his rookie season and had over 1,000 yards, and followed that up with an impressive second year.
In 2023, Olave had 1,123 yards and five touchdowns, but has made a slower start to this season. Through six games Olave has just 280 yards and one touchdown, with his return now unknown following the injury.
The concern with Olave is he has already suffered three concussions throughout his NFL career, meaning that could rise to four despite less than three years experience in the league. Concussions are being taken more seriously with each year, as seen with Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Tagovailoa suffered his NFL third concussion this season and was told to retire by medical professionals. Tagovailoa has since returned to the field with the Dolphins, after making it clear he had no plans to cut short his football career.
