Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a rib injury during his team’s home game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and was ruled out by the team, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reported it is not a “long-term injury,” but the team was being cautious after taking a big early lead over the Panthers. The team will evaluate the issue on Monday.

Daniels came back onto the sidelines without his uniform in the second half to a big ovation from the home crowd:

Daniels suffered the injury after a seven-yard run in the first quarter. He remained in the game for the rest of the drive, which was capped by a Austin Seibert field goal to give Washington a 10-0 lead.

However, Daniels did not return to the game. He attempted some throws on the field but returned to the sidelines to get checked by medical personnel. Daniels then went to the blue medical tent before walking off the field.

The rookie has been phenomenal during his first six NFL games, completing an NFL-high 75.3 percent of his passes for 1,404 yards, six touchdowns and just two interceptions. He’s also rushed for 322 yards and four more scores.

Daniels has already developed into one of the NFL’s most electric talents, and he’s also been the catalyst in turning around a franchise that’s largely been a losing one since last winning the Super Bowl 33 years ago.

The Commanders’ backup is Marcus Mariota, who is in his 10th season. Mariota began his career as the franchise quarterback for the Tennessee Titans in 2015, when he was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft. He stayed with the team for five years before bouncing around the league from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Atlanta Falcons to the Philadelphia Eagles and now the Commanders.

Mariota is certainly one of the NFL’s higher-quality backups, and he’s more than capable of holding the fort down in Daniels’ absence.

But Daniels’ sky-high talent can someday take Washington back to a long-awaited Super Bowl, and the hope is that he’s back sooner than later.
