The New York Yankees have exercised the 2025 club option for manager Aaron Boone, meaning the longtime skipper will return for an eighth season next campaign.
New York is fresh off their first World Series appearance since 2009 – a five-game defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Boone has led the team to a 603-429 record and six playoff appearances in his seven seasons.
The former third baseman played for the Yankees in 2003 and established a relationship with current Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. “Aaron is a steadying presence in our clubhouse and possesses a profound ability to connect with and foster relationships with his players,” Cashman said on Friday.
Despite Boone’s consistent winning, he’s often the subject of extreme ridicule amongst a Yankees fan base desperate for a World Series title.

In Game One of the 2024 World Series, Boone elected for left-hander Nestor Cortes — who hadn’t pitched in over a month — out of the bullpen in the 10th inning instead of Tim Hill.
He’s perceived to have an undying loyalty to certain players even if they’re in the midst of a slump, namely Alex Verdugo and Anthony Rizzo.
Yankees fans to X on Friday to air out their thoughts on the club’s decision to retain Boone, mostly under the team’s official announcement. The top comment read: “No one wanted this”

Many echoed the time-old concerns prevalent throughout Boone’s tenure. One fan tweeted, “So another year of lack of hustle, bad baserunning, and sloppy defense. Sounds like the Yankee way.”
“Boone is amazing man. I actually give him credit for being so fireable and never losing his job. He’s an inspiration to us all,” commented another.
Some pointed the finger at Cashman – the team’s GM since 1998 – for using Boone as a human shield. “LOLOL. Of course he is because his Master Chasman is still on the lifetime scholarship,” someone pointed out.

Sports Illustrated writer Jimmy Traina seconded the belief. ): “I 100% believe Brian Cashman keeps Aaron Boone around to take the bullets because once they ax Boone and they still fail to win a World Series, there’s only one person left to blame,” he posted.
Boone himself was very gracious of the organization upon the release of the news. “I am grateful for the trust placed in me to lead this team. It’s a responsibility – and an opportunity – that I will never take lightly,” he announced.
“It’s a great privilege to show up for work every day and be surrounded by so many determined and talented players, coaches and staff members. Starting with Steinbrenner family, there is a collective commitment to excellence within this organization that is embedded in all that we do. I’m already looking forward to reporting for spring training in Tampa and working tirelessly to return the Yankees to the postseason to compete for a World Championship.”
