The New York Liberty will be celebrating in style after defeating the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA Finals.
On Monday, the Liberty secured a thrilling 67-62 overtime win over the Lynx in a winner-take-all Game 5 to secure their first championship in franchise history. Up until this season, New York had appeared in five previous Finals series but came up empty each time.
Speaking to the New York Post at last week’s Columbus Day Parade, New York City mayor Eric Adams revealed that the Liberty would be honored with a ticker-tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes should they win the WNBA finals – marking the first time a New York City women’s sports team would be given such a celebration. After New York’s Jonquel Jones propelled her team to victory with 17 points, six rebounds and one assist, the 64-year-old made good on his promise.

Taking to social media, Adams announced that the parade celebrating the Liberty’s accomplishment will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m. ET. Shortly after, a ceremony will be held at City Hall plaza at noon, while the Liberty will additionally host a fan celebration at Barclays Center at 7 p.m.
“We are excited, congratulations New York Liberty for winning your first WNBA title,” Adams said in a short clip posted to X. “You made us proud, and we’re going to make you proud. We’re going to give you a ticker-tape parade, 10 a.m. on Thursday morning. And then after that, we’re going to have an amazing ceremony right here at City Hall to say thank you to our heroes. Congratulations New York Liberty, WNBA champions.”
In a separate official statement, New York Liberty CEO Keia Clarke added: “This Championship is not only for us and New York City – it’s for all Liberty Loyals and our Brooklyn community! We are honored to celebrate at the iconic Canyon of Heroes, and also come together with our passionate fans at our home in Brooklyn.

“The community in the borough has embraced us wholeheartedly since we began playing at Barclays Center and we want to share this moment with them.”
Per an informational text sent out to fans, the ticker-tape parade will start in Battery Park and travel north along Broadway towards City Hall. Approximately 3,000 pounds of confetti – which will come from several different sources including businesses and residential buildings along the route – will rain down throughout the festivities.
In recent years, New York City sports fans have been deprived of the opportunity to cheer their teams on during a ticker tape parade. The last procession happened over a decade ago when the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots in the 2012 Super Bowl.
More recently, the United States Women’s National Team has taken two trips down the Canyon of Heroes after winning Women’s World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019.
