The New York Giants have cut Daniel Jones after the quarterback asked to be released following his demotion down the depth chart.
On Thursday, reports broke claiming Jones spent part of the open portion of practice wearing a red scout team jersey while lined up at safety throughout the offensive install period. The Giants are preparing to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, and Jones was joined on the scout team defense by some practice squad offensive line, tight end coach Tim Kelly, assistant quarterback coach Christian Jones and offensive assistant Christian Daboll.
Twenty-four hours later, the Giants have decided to cut ties with Jones. Giants President John Mara released a statement announcing the news, confirming the decision to move on from Jones after he reportedly approached the organization and asked to be let go.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team,” Mara’s statement read. “Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out.
“We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Jones will now go on waivers, but given the size of his contract, he is expected to clear and become a free agent. The Giants are set to take on over $20 million in dead money by releasing the 27-year-old.

Two years ago, Jones signed a blockbuster four-year contract worth $160 million. Since inking the extension, he’s led the Giants to a 3-13 record, been benched, and ultimately released.
Across his five and a half years as the starting quarterback with the Giants, Jones has completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. He has tallied an 84.3 rating, and added 2,179 rushing yards along with 15 scores.
Ahead of the 2023 season, the Giants infamously passed on signing Saquon Barkley to a long-term deal in favor and placed the franchise tag on the running back after Jones was handed his contract. Barkley then left for the Giants’ NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles, where he is the heartbeat of their offense and has emerged as an Offensive Player of the Year contender.
It is unclear where Jones will land now. But his time in New York, at least with Big Blue, is over. Tommy DeVito is set to start against the Bucs on Sunday, with Drew Lock serving as the backup.
