Mike Tomlin broke the fourth wall during the Pittsburgh Steelers win over the New York Giants after Russell Wilson completed a sensational pass at a crucial moment.

Wilson put in another strong performance in his second start since somewhat controversially taking Justin Fields‘ place, with Tomlin admitting that he made the tough call to bench the latter despite the team having an impressive 4-2 start to the season.

After shining in his debut in their win over the Jets, the veteran quarterback put in another strong game against the Giants with 278 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-28 passing attempts.

Wilson especially came alive in the fourth quarterback, throwing a perfect pass to George Pickens to move the team into the red zone before throwing another deep ball to Calvin Austin for a touchdown.

And after one play in particular, Wilson threw it deep to Van Jefferson who managed to stay inbounds for the completion with the camera immediately panning to Tomlin. Seemingly aware he was on camera, Tomlin looked directly into the lens and nodded while putting his finger up in approval before smiling and walking off.

The 35-year-old quarterback has put in the best play that fans have seen from him in over two years, since he left the Seattle Seahawks after struggling with the Denver Broncos – with fans believing Tomlin to have already found a way to best use the quarterback.

Mike Tomlin’s decision continues to look justified after turning to Russell Wilson

His decision to bench Fields after a moderately solid start to the season, with FOX Sports analyst Jay Glazer reporting that the head coach went against others opinions in making the quarterback change.

Tomlin had initially named Wilson as the starter heading into the season, but a hamstring injury saw Fields start and do enough to keep Wilson out of the role after returning. Tomlin had continued to leave the door open for Wilson to start though, and decided to make the move after Fields and the team blew out the Las Vegas Raiders, with Terry Bradshaw criticizing him for the call.

The Steelers offense has undoubtedly looked much more dangerous with Wilson under center, getting the best out of his receivers while mixing in his ability in the play-action, aiding Najee Harris’ rushing production. Pittsburgh now has a 6-2 record, continuing to look like legitimate contenders in the AFC.
