NFL analyst Michael Strahan has paid tribute to veterans and active service members after he was accused by viewers of “disrespecting” the national anthem.
The Fox NFL Sunday regular stood alongside his studio colleagues during the broadcast at San Diego Naval Base prior to Veterans Day. Surrounded by military personnel, every member of the team placed their hand over their heart as “Star Spangled Banner” played – apart from Strahan.
Following this poignant moment before the day’s NFL action, the New York Giants legend was on the receiving end of criticism for his controversial actions. Now, the one-time Super Bowl champion has issued a response to his detractors as he re-affirmed his gratitude towards veterans with an emotive social media post.

Uploading a photograph of his ex-military father to his Instagram stories, Strahan spoke of his admiration for veterans and active service members as he set the record straight. He said: “Thank you to all veterans and active service members who courageously risk their lives to protect us every day.”
“Your selfless service is beyond measure,” he continued, before paying tribute to his father for his service, adding: “Just as I honor my father, I keep all of you in my thoughts each and every day as we would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you. Thank You.”
Newsmax star Todd Starnes was among those who had been critical of Strahan for his actions during the Fox NFL Sunday broadcast. He took to Twitter/X to say: “Michael Strahan disrespected the military during a Veterans Day pre-game show on @NFLonFOX.

“The great irony is Strahan on a ship surrounded by men and women who would willingly sacrifice their lives to protect his freedom. So, his behavior is not just repugnant, it’s downright cowardly.”
Meanwhile, one fan posted on Twitter/X: “What the hell is wrong with Michael Strahan!? On effing Veterans Day! Boo, @NFL. Boo, @NFLonFOX. Not cool,” as another added: “Fire Michael Strahan! This is unacceptable!’ a third said: ‘@NFLonFOX Michael Strahan, standing with US military honoring Veterans Day can’t show honor and respect during the National Anthem… Wow!”
During the broadcast on Fox, NFL icon Tom Brady recorded a moving monologue as he honored service personnel and veterans, saying: “We really honor you today in the NFL. You men and women who are serving us around the world, you’re our heroes. You have our respect. You have the best team in the world – and I’ve seen some great teams.
The former Patriots quarterback added: “But there’s no greater team in the world than our military and our armed forces. We admire your commitment. We admire your dedication. We admired your sacrifice. So enjoy today. We as the NFL, we honor you. We love you. And thank you so much.”
