Lenny Kravitz describes life as “art,” but he sees his career more as chapters in a book — and thus far, there are 13 chapters.
In an interview with PEOPLE, the “American Woman” singer said he’s often asked about his mindset at certain times in his life. Before answering, Kravitz, 60, has to first think about his 13 albums.
“Everything is by albums. I have to start with what album I was doing, and then it all comes back to what was going on in my life,” he said. “So those are the defining chapters.”
In May, Kravitz released his latest album, Blue Electric Light, so that chapter included a South American tour, an upcoming European tour and a Las Vegas residency at Park MGM, dubbed Blue Electric Light Las Vegas, set for August 2025, which he announced on Tuesday.
“I am a student of music and music history and show business, and Vegas is legendary,” he said. “It’s changed. It’s not the same Vegas it was in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, but it has its history. So to be part of that and say, ‘Hey, I played Vegas. I’ve done a residency in Vegas.’ It’s cool.”
While he’s undoubtedly known for his music, much is made of Kravitz’s sometimes eclectic lifestyle — he’s often barefoot and was seen last year in the gym working out in leather pants, boots and sunglasses. Kravitz takes it all in stride, saying his music and lifestyle go hand in hand.
“They go together. Taking care of myself and the lifestyle goes with the music,” he said. “Living is an art, so how are you going to live it? It really is how you approach life. It changes a lot, and if you do your best to live it in the light and live gracefully and learn from your, we call them mistakes, but our lessons and take care of yourself, you can get great results. So it all goes together. The music, the lifestyle, everything. It’s all one and the same.”
For Kravitz, rarely is there a time when he’s not thinking about music, no matter where he is or what he’s doing. He often wakes up with music in his head, prompting him to grab a guitar and a phone and start recording. He once even wrote a song during a media interview, which he noted was his “weirdest” songwriting experience to date.
“I was doing an interview while I was making my second record, Mama Said. I don’t know why I was doing an interview then, but I was, and while I was having the interview with the guy, I was writing a song in my head,” he recalled. “That was very strange. I was actually carrying on a conversation with this guy, but I was like, uh-oh. It just came, and I had to keep it going in my head while I was doing an interview, and then the second he walked out, I recorded it. It was bizarre.”
He quickly noted to PEOPLE, “I promise you I’m not doing that right now!”
Blue Electric Light Las Vegas will take place Aug. 1, 2, 6, 8 and 9, 2025. Tickets go on sale to the public on Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. PST.
