As one of the most iconic athletes to emerge from the Cleveland area, LeBron James took a strong stance in defense of Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson after a tense confrontation with the city’s fans on Sunday. Watson was booed by his own home crowd after suffering a significant injury during the Browns’ 21-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, sparking a wave of condemnation from both Browns players and James.
The incident occurred in the second quarter when Watson crumbled to the turf after planting his foot awkwardly during a scramble attempt. It was later confirmed that the veteran quarterback had suffered an Achilles injury, ending his season. As Watson was carted off the field in tears, some Cleveland fans jeered him, a response that shocked and angered many of his teammates.
James, who has always been vocal about supporting his hometown teams, took to social media to call out those who booed Watson. “Cleveland Fans! Y’all know how much we’ve been through throughout the years, both good, bad, and indifferent,” James wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “With that being said, booing anyone that’s down with an injury, let alone your own player, is LAME AF!! We should be ashamed of ourselves as Browns and as fans to boo anyone, especially someone suffering a season- or career-altering injury.”
Garrett acknowledged the complexities surrounding Watson’s presence on the team but emphasized the need for empathy, especially in moments of vulnerability. “The man’s not perfect; he doesn’t need to be. I can’t judge him for what he does off the field or on the field because I can’t throw stones from my glass house,” Garrett continued. “But we need to do better. We need to do better on the football field, and we need to do better as fans in having some empathy for a man who’s doing the best he can.”
Watson’s injury has put the Browns in a difficult position, not only from a football perspective but also in terms of managing a fan base that remains divided over the quarterback’s past and his on-field struggles.
