New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson sent shockwaves across the NFL after pulling off what some are calling the catch of the year – but his teammates asserted that the highlight-reel play is nothing new for No. 5.

In the fourth quarter of Thursday’s game between the Jets and Houston Texans, New York appeared to be spiraling towards a sixth-consecutive loss while trailing 10-7. But Wilson ensured that his team’s season wouldn’t reach a sinister end on Halloween night, taking matters into his own hands – or hand, for that matter.

With just over 13 minutes remaining in the contest, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers dropped back and surveyed the field before throwing a jump ball up for Wilson, who reached up with one arm to snag it out of the air while contorting his body. Though the acrobatic catch was initially ruled an incompletion due to the 24-year-old’s inability to get both feet in bounds, a replay challenge showed that his shin landed in the back of the endzone.

“That shin clearly touches in bounds before the knee goes out of bounds,” official Terry McAulay said. “That puts him in bounds with control. Touchdown.”

The 26-yard-score – Wilson’s second of the game – turned the tides of the contest, providing the Jets with the spark they’d use to stave off the Texans in a 21-13 win. Following the much-needed victory, players in New York’s locker room were still struggling to wrap their heads around the incredible touchdown grab.

“My initial reaction was dang, he just made the craziest catch ever,” Jets wide receiver Xavier Gipson exclusively told Mirror Sports U.S. “But it’s normal now, he does it all the time. In practice, he’s always making crazy catches.”

Rookie running back Braelon Allen expressed a similar sentiment, adding: “Just speechless, definitely the best I’ve ever seen in person. All I’m going to say is, I said months ago [that] Garrett is the best football player I’ve seen. And now he’s finally showing it, putting it on tape, so I’m happy for him.”

Others credited the miraculous catch with reinvigorating the entire Jets team in what’s been a disappointing season thus far. “I thought it was amazing; I’m not gonna say I’m surprised just because I know he does that every day,” said tight end Jeremy Ruckert, who also played alongside Wilson at Ohio State for three seasons. “I’ve been with him since college and knew he had the ability to do that, but the fact that he made that come to life in that moment and in that part of the game was pretty special.

“That got the team going for sure,” he added. “In those moments where you see someone make a play – and the fact that he did that in that time of the game when we’re losing – it definitely gave the team a boost in energy and we fed off that.”

Immediately following Wilson’s reception, many were quick to compare it to Odell Beckham Jr.’s iconic one-handed snag with the New York Giants 10 years prior, which additionally took place in the same MetLife Stadium end zone – though at the opposite corner.

According to his teammates, Wilson’s play takes the cake over Beckham’s. “Yeah, I think just in terms of difficulty, he had a defender all over him. The way he went up with the backhand, I think it was pretty special,” Ruckert said when asked to compare the two.

“This one might be better because he got that shin down. He really reached,” Allen argued. “Oh my god, that was disgusting. I would put this one above it.”
