Phoenix Suns star shooting guard Devin Booker is pushing back at the narrative that he disparaged Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James during a recent preseason game.
Booker took to social media to address a viral video that appeared to show him saying, “He’s just no good,” after James missed a free throw, calling out the number of people who “liked” the video:
James, the son of Lakers star forward LeBron James, had four points and two rebounds in 17 minutes of action against the Suns this past Thursday. He scored less than five points in five out of six preseason games, including two scoreless outings.
The 20-year-old had his best performance on Friday against the Golden State Warriors, finishing with 17 points, four rebounds, three steals, an assist and a block in 35 minutes as the Lakers rested their starters and key rotation players in a 132-74 loss.
“It just a great feeling to go out there and not think as much as I do and just play,” the youngster said after the game.
James is unlikely to play a significant role on the Lakers during his rookie season, but his development will be something that draws a massive amount of attention due to his famous lineage.
Still, the USC product said he will use the experience from the preseason as a building block for whatever comes next.
“[It gives me] just a little bit of confidence going into the season even though I might not be in that rotation, might not be playing, but just going into practice, maybe G League games with that confidence in myself to go out there and play my game,” James said. “I feel like that’s the biggest part of it.”
