Derek Carr made NFL history by becoming the first quarterback to lose to 31 franchises as his New Orleans Saints fell to the Carolina Panthers.

On Sunday in a NFC South showdown, the Panthers claimed a 23-22 victory over the Saints after running back Chuba Hubbard scored on a 16-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Hubbard finished with 72 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Bryce Young tallied 171 yards along with both a touchdown and an interception.

Meanwhile, it was a day to forget for Carr. The veteran completed 18-of-31 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown, but he received criticism online after receiver Chris Olave suffered a sickening injury in the first half.

Carr overthrew Olave in triple coverage, and the 24-year-old former first-round pick left the game with the fourth concussion of his professional career. Without his star receiver, Carr lost to the Panthers for the first time in his career to become the first quarterback to lose to 31 different NFL franchises.

His former team, the Las Vegas Raiders, is the only franchise to not defeat Carr. The Saints host the Raiders at the Caesars Superdome next month, and the AFC West franchise will be desperate to not only secure an important win but inflict further misery – and history – on their former quarterback.

Carr joined New Orleans as a free agent ahead of the 2023 season. The NFL veteran played all 17 last year and threw for 3,878 yards and 25 touchdowns, and he has 1,225 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions in 2024.

He missed time earlier this season with an oblique injury, and Carr is now facing questions over his decision-making after his pass drew Olave into a huge hit. The incident drew the ire of former Saints receiver Michael Thomas, who took aim at Carr with a string of brutal tweets.

Thomas, who played with both Olave and Carr on the Saints last season, took to X to write: “Derek Carr for you I been told yall —- sad. Dude scary and panic and just throw the ball. Get him the – out of here he so —.”

He added: “Dude tried to lie and say I was jealous of them making Chris [Olave] WR1 [the] whole time he can’t even get him a decent ball. He need his ass whooped.”

Thomas proceeded to retweet a number of posts criticizing Carr following the game, including one from Jason Moore which read: “Derek Carr deserves to be fined for throwing that hospital ball to Olave. He is 100% responsible for Olave being knocked out.”

The 2-7 Saints are next in action against the 6-3 Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Nov. 10.
