The Los Angeles Dodgers have taken a commanding 3-0 lead in the World Series against the New York Yankees, but for manager Dave Roberts, there’s no room for early celebrations. Roberts, fully aware of the unpredictability of playoff baseball, knows all too well that the series isn’t over yet.
Following the Dodgers’ 4-2 victory over the Yankees in Game 3 at Yankee Stadium, Roberts faced a round of questions from the media.
One particular question struck a nerve by stirring memories of Roberts’ 2004 experience with the Boston Red Sox — a team that famously overcame a 3-0 deficit against the Yankees in the ALCS, making baseball history as the first team to accomplish such a comeback before sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals for the World Series title.
The reporter started by acknowledging Roberts’ unique position. “Dave, you’re one of the few people on Earth who know what it’s like to come back from a 3-0 deficit,” they began, but Roberts quickly cut in with a grin. “Don’t talk about that,” he interjected. “Wrong guy. Way too early.”

Roberts kept a lighthearted tone but underscored his serious approach toward closing out the series. While he humorously avoided giving away any “secrets” on how to stage a comeback from a 3-0 deficit, Roberts emphasized the need for the Dodgers to maintain their focus.
“There’s just got to be urgency. I don’t want to let these guys up for air,” he added, reflecting his determination to keep the Yankees at bay and finish the job without giving them any hope of a rally.
The Dodgers are eyeing their first World Series championship since 2020, though that title came in a shortened season.
A win this year would mark their first full-season championship since 1988, a long-awaited goal for the team and their fans. Roberts is adamant about not celebrating prematurely, knowing that the final win can often be the hardest to secure.
