NBC broadcaster Cris Collinsworth may need to adjust the prescription for his glasses after sharing a bizarre breakdown from the ‘Sunday Night Football’ broadcast booth.
With just over nine minutes left in the second quarter of the Week 8 matchup between the 49ers and Cowboys, San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy dropped back and completed a 13-yard pass to rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. Collinsworth promptly heaped praise onto the signal-caller following the strong throw – though not for the reasons one might expect.
“What a great play by Purdy on this one. He is gonna get drilled on this one,” Collinsworth began. “Blitz off the corner – they have blitzed [on] almost every shotgun formation so far – and Purdy has just hung in there. He saw it coming, he knew he was gonna get hit and delivered a strike.”

Taking to social media, SNF viewers promptly pointed out that the completion hardly matched up with Collinsworth’s commentary. In reality, Purdy was not even touched by any Cowboys defender, as he managed to get the ball off before safety Israel Mukuamu could reach him.
“Purdy completely untouched,” one X user wrote, with another adding: “So it isn’t just me? Collinsworth is awful.”
A third sarcastically quipped: “I said the same thing to myself.”

Purdy, to his credit, proved to be a problem for the Cowboys’ defense throughout the night, excelling both through the air and on the ground. Through the first three quarters, he completed 17-of-23 passes for 254 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions while additionally rushing six times for 50 yards and another score.
The dominant performance was a stark contrast to Purdy’s last start in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs, during which he struggled to find much of any success in the passing games. Against defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s stout unit, the 24-year-old threw three interceptions and amassed just 212 yards through the air – a personal low this season.
Yet Purdy has always seemed to have the Cowboys’ number, routinely picking apart their defense over his three-year NFL career. Entering play Sunday, he recorded 466 passing yards, four touchdowns and a 120.5 passer rating in two prior games – both wins – against Dallas.
Ahead of the Cowboys’ latest faceoff with Purdy, team owner Jerry Jones likened him to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and three-time Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes. “Well, you know, Brock Purdy … he looked Mahomes-ish. If you looked at him in college, he did things like Mahomes,” Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan’s ‘K&C Masterpiece.’
“He did shovel stuff, and he did that. And he wore Oklahoma out. [Former Oklahoma coach] I know Barry Switzer called me and told me, he said that there’s a kid up there at Iowa State that has something different. And so, the bottom line is that he does have the ability to make things happen creatively, a unique ability.”
