Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was not in the best of moods Tuesday following Sunday’s blowout 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions.

He lashed out at critics during an appearance with Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan (h/t Jon Machota of The Athletic) and said he was “sick” about the latest effort from his team.

“You really think you’re gonna sit here with a microphone and tell me all of the things that I’ve done wrong without going over the rights? Listen, we both know we’re talking to a lot of great fans, a lot of great listeners,” he said. “And I’m very sorry for what happened out there Sunday. I’m sick about what happened Sunday.”

Jones later explained his comments to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Jon Machota:

“I don’t know that I would go as far as (calling) the volume connotation as yelling. OK? But the facts are that if I’m going to be grilled by the tribunal, I don’t need it to be by the guys I’m paying. I can take it from fans and take it from other people. I take a lot of pride in how fair and how much I try to work with the media, we’re brothers and sisters. But I was a little frustrated there today.

“We got in there as of accounting for decisions made in the offseason. OK? They might as well gone back to decisions made in 2010. My point is, and that’s from my perspective, there’s no question, I’m sure, that they would have liked to have grilled me like the fans are thinking, what are you going to do about that? I get it. I get all of that. And really will go along with it.

While Dallas is 3-3 and far from eliminated from any NFC playoff race at this stage of the season, there have been some ugly performances in the early going.

It lost 44-19 in Week 2 to the New Orleans Saints, which quickly eliminated the positive vibes that came from a blowout win over the Cleveland Browns to start the campaign. Things seemed to be trending in a better direction following two straight wins over the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, but they took an ugly turn Sunday.

The Lions didn’t just come into Dallas and blow the Cowboys out.

They ran multiple trick plays, including a hook-and-lateral to offensive lineman Penei Sewell, and frankly didn’t appear to take the NFC East team as a serious threat as the game progressed and the outcome became clearer.

It’s far from surprising that Jones was so frustrated, as his team appears well behind a potential Super Bowl contender in the Lions.

However, it doesn’t appear he will take that frustration out on head coach Mike McCarthy, as the team owner told reporters after the game he wasn’t considering a coaching change.

“I think it’s just part of the business,” McCarthy said when asked about rumors regarding his job security. “When people ask me about really anything with the team, part of working here, it’s part of the business.”

Dallas made waves this offseason by giving long-term contract extensions to quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. It was supposed to set the tone for a competitive season that might feature a deep playoff run.

Yet inconsistency and overall struggles have largely defined the opening stretch of the schedule for Jones’ team, which will look to bounce back against another potential Super Bowl contender in the San Francisco 49ers following a bye week.
