Kansas City International Airport has been closed due to ice accumulation, initially leaving the Kansas City Chiefs stranded ahead of their flight to Denver on Saturday.
According to CBS Sports, the airport closing left the Chiefs plane stranded on the runway. The official X page for the airport posted a statement to update passengers that all flight operations had been ceased.
“Saturday 2:50pm Update – Due to rapid ice accumulation, the airfield at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is currently closed to flight operations,” the statement read. “Check with your airline for specific flight information. Additional status updates to follow.”

CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson confirmed that the Chiefs were sat on the runway since 1:15 p.m. but after a five-hour delay, were cleared to fly. At 9:25 p.m. the Chiefs confirmed via X that the team had touched down in Denver and made it safely despite the weather warnings.
The Kansas City area is preparing for a major storm, with heavy snow expected on Sunday and conditions already starting to become problematic. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning at noon on Saturday, and a blizzard warning is also in effect from 3 a.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday for several counties.
Snowfall has turned to freezing rain, and locals have been advised against traveling until the storm passes. The Chiefs are scheduled to face the Denver Broncos at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday, which will wrap up the regular season.
The game doesn’t mean much for the Chiefs, as they have already secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC due to their superior 15-1 record. Head coach Andy Reid is expected to rest several starters, with the Chiefs also enjoying a first-round bye in the playoffs.
But the game is extremely important for the Broncos, as they must beat a well-rested Chiefs unit in order to clinch a wildcard spot in the playoffs. The Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals are clinging on in the hunt, but their seasons would end with a Broncos win.
