Kansas City Chiefs owner and longtime Republican donor Clark Hunt has spoken out in support of his players using their platforms to engage in political discussions, as one of his star athletes, kicker Harrison Butker, continues to make headlines for his outspoken views. Hunt emphasized that he has no issue with his players voicing their opinions, even when it comes to controversial issues or elections.

“Obviously, we have players on both sides of the political spectrum, on both sides of whichever controversial issue you want to bring up,” Hunt told The Kansas City Star. “I’m not at all concerned when our players use their platform to try and make a difference for what they believe in.”

No Chiefs player has been more politically active than Butker, who recently launched his own political action committee (PAC) aimed at mobilizing Christian voters. Butker, who has been vocal about his pro-life stance, has also thrown his support behind former President Donald Trump, further igniting debate.

The Chiefs kicker made headlines back in May after delivering a polarizing commencement speech at Benedictine College, a private Catholic institution. In his address, Butker took aim at gender ideology, Pride month, and President Joe Biden’s stance on abortion, which sparked significant backlash. Despite the controversy, Butker stood by his beliefs, stating, “I’ve just decided, ‘You know what? There are things that I believe wholeheartedly that I think will make this world a better place,’ and I’m going to preach that. If people don’t agree, they don’t agree, but I’m going to continue to say what I believe to be true and love everyone along the way.”

Butker’s UPRIGHT PAC emphasizes traditional Christian values, with a mission to encourage voters to “reclaim the traditional values that have made this country great.”

Hunt’s stance on political activism is particularly noteworthy given his family’s significant contributions to conservative causes. While he has supported conservative candidates, including South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, and made substantial donations to groups like the Koch family PAC, Hunt has maintained a hands-off approach when it comes to his players’ political expressions.

Butker’s outspokenness is not the only political conversation surrounding the Chiefs. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently addressed his decision to remain neutral in the upcoming election, despite former President Donald Trump’s repeated references to his wife, Brittany, as a supporter. Mahomes clarified that he would not endorse any candidate, preferring instead to use his platform to encourage people to vote and conduct their own research.

“I don’t want my place and my platform to be used to endorse a candidate,” Mahomes said. “My place is to inform people to get registered to vote. It’s to inform people to do their own research and then make the best decision for them and their family.”

Mahomes was responding to Trump’s comments about his wife, where the former president praised Brittany Mahomes for her alleged support. Trump told Fox News, “I actually like Mrs. Mahomes much better, if you want to know the truth. She’s a big Trump fan. I like Brittany. I think Brittany is great.”

Mahomes, however, remained focused on the positive work he and his wife are doing within their community. “At the end of the day, it’s about me and my family and how we treat other people. I think you see Brittany does a lot in the community. I do a lot in the community to help bring people up and give people an opportunity to use their voice.”

While Mahomes and Butker have taken different approaches to political expression, Hunt’s backing of player activism stands out, especially in a league where many owners traditionally align with the Republican Party. Notably, Hunt’s real estate company, Hunt Midwest, has made significant political donations, including a $750,000 contribution to the Koch family’s Americans for Prosperity PAC, and over $300,000 to various Republican Congressional and Senatorial committees.

In a politically charged environment, the Chiefs are balancing activism with their on-field aspirations. As the defending Super Bowl champions, the team has started the season with a strong 5-0 record and is preparing for a highly anticipated rematch against the San Francisco 49ers this weekend.

Meanwhile, tight end Travis Kelce, who has largely remained quiet on political matters, continues to make headlines for his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. Swift, a vocal supporter of Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, has stirred even more attention around Kelce, though the star tight end has yet to publicly comment on the intersection of politics and his personal life.

As election season intensifies, it remains to be seen how political discourse will play out within the Chiefs’ organization.

Nonetheless, Hunt’s openness to player expression reflects a broader conversation about the role of athletes in shaping political and social dialogue in today’s sports world.
